Force DHCP client update?

By n2y2 ·
Is there anyway for the server to force all DHCP clients to renew their IP leases?

In the DHCP Manager there is an option to "Delete all leases" after a disconnect the client should attempt a renew, or if your having problems with conflicts stick the "ipconfig /renew" in the system login script this will do it upon relogon
Good luck

To further clarify, the DHCP server I am specifically asking about is Linux based. It serves multiple platforms (Windows 9x and NT, Mac, Linux, etc.) Occationally, I must change the subnet. That means walking to each client machine and manualy performing a release/renew. Anyone know a way to force a release/renew from a DHCP server (not at the next reboot, I mean on demand)?

There is really no way of doing this from the server. Once a client has a lease, it will only try to recontact the server at lease half-life. (DHCP is a pull-protocol, it has no provision for pushing data out). The normal way of managing this is to plan your configuration changes so that they can migrate in a time-frame not less than 1.5 times the lease time. If you want to speed it up, shorten your leases...
