format hard drive

I want to format my hard drive on a ibm clone windows system and relaod windows for a clean install. I forget the dos sets...can someone help

First, make sure that you have a startup disk, and not just a boot disk for your version of Windows.

Second, I assume that you have backed up all critical files and settings.

I also recommend that you download and have available the latest drivers for all hardware.

Boot from the startup disk.
The command is
format C: /u/s
The "U" switch formats the entire drive, not just delte the FAT record.
The "S" switch transfers the operating system, and makes it so that the hard drive can boot to a DOS prompt.

Insert your Windows CD, and run setup.

A really good DOS site is http://vernon.frazee.net/ms-dos/6.22/help/index.htm
There is a whole heap of the old dos commands online.
