    Freelance Project Management?

    Locked

    by adamblevins ·

I’ve been in PM for 10 years and IT for 15.

Between contracts in 2007 I formed an LLC to do independent consulting (PM, Support, WebDev) hoping to bring in some cash and become self employed.

    Its panned out like this:

Project Management: The SMB market (my target) doesn’t see the value, or simply can’t afford, a PM.

Systems Support: Eliminated. Not enough profit to make it worthwhile.

Web Development: I can do it, but it?s not my best skill and I’m slow to produce. Time = Money = its not working for me.

I realize that my value add comes from sales, managing work and customer relationships.

The problem is, the gigs I’m finding are so small that I can’t afford to outsource.

That leads me to the idea of becoming a Freelance PM, which seems impossible to sell in the SMB market.

    Any thoughts?

      Look at contracting companies

I have worked with contract PMs, but they tend to be affiliated with contracting companies. SMBs tend to be scared to work with an independant directly, if you don’t work out and they got you through a contracting agency, they can pressure the contractor to replace you.
