Assuming the computer never froze before you installed new hardware (HW), the problem may be due to your new HW. You need to isolate the source.
1. Since you have two RAMs, take out one of them and see if you continue to have freezing problem. If you do not, the problem got solved. The RAM you took out was the cause. If you still do, try with other RAM.
2. If the freezing stopped, then the second RAM was the culprit. If the freezing continues, replace the 10/100 card (NIC).
3. Now you get the idea. The cardinal rule of troubleshooting is "Undo what you did when a problem starts."

Obviously, before you take out the second RAM, you have to put the first one back in.

to add to answer #1, did you install any new software? If you did, remove that as well and see if the problem goes away.

Addition to answer 1 and 2. Try removing the 10/100 card. you may have an IRQ conflict. Also if the Compaq PC is a Deskpro 350-650 check to male sure that the cpu is seated properly.
