Because there were loading issues before and Part 2 was getting as lengthy as part one (and I hate scrolling like anyone else), I decided to start a Part 3.

    So…in honor of Shellbot

          by jck ·

          In reply to Whatever? WHATEVER?

If I get in trouble here for not referencing the old conversation, then rules makers for TR needed to forget about pulling butts out of a fire and start thinking about how to pull their head out of their ****.

I don’t feel like arguing today. Thanks tho. I’m going back to implementing a stupid design into my software that will get antiquated within a year and I’m just going to tell the guy near the top who wants it for his pet person in another division:

“We told you they wouldn’t want to keep it. But, you insisted. So, I hope you can validate x months use of a project that cost the organization several thousand in research, development and maintenance for a few days use in a few months.”

I think it’s that time of the month for me.

I need to go home before I hit someone….really hard. 🙁

          In reply to Fire?

Sorry. If I had known that work was jerking your chain that hard, I wouldn’t have yanked it myself.

How ’bout a Glenlivet hug with a Guinness squeeze to make it up?

        • #3034209

Yeah…I need a vacation bad. I told my friends and family both that I was ready to walk away from everything. Doesn’t seem worth it to work your nuts off for the little anyone will pay you and/or the lack of loyalty you get from them after they demand your undying devotion.

There’s only one person I will never let down if I can help it, and that’s my niece.

Work expects that kind of sentiment, they better work on their people skills a little.

…no less than what they’ve given me.

Don’t come in sick. We don’t want you getting others sick.

Oh, you have had too many days off.

Okay…sooo…want me to come in and get other workers sick…or stay home and get well?

That’s part of the grief. Ugh. I need a trip to Europe…and I’ll stay there…illegally if I must.

        Had a busy, worrysome weekend.

Friend in Holland is in hospital and may have to have heart surgery.

Friend’s father is in the hospital for reasons unknown. Not got but one text from my friend in 3 days now.

I’m quite simply just exhausted. I need a holiday bad, or I might just walk away from everything.

Friend in Holland might be out of hospital today.

Friend’s dad is out of hospital, and she got home safe.

Still thinking about walking away from the job, house, everything. The micromanagement has gotten worse and worse, and the boss seems to hold me to a separate standard from the others. So instead of going to HR and filing complaints, I am just going to maneuver into a position to just come in one day and say au revoir to him and go work for a tech company doing simple field support and living a more simple life where my money goes more toward a comfortable retirement than building assets that end up worth little in the long run.

@ 0530 hours we where woken up by the Fire Brigade passing the house and as it was pointless attempting to go back to sleep I just started the day a bit early. Even looked quite nice with the sun out and hardly any clouds in the sky I thought it was going to be a nice day but now less than 3 hours latter there is no visible sun and it’s raining.

Why do I feel like I’m living in Melbourne where you get every season every hour? :^0

I live in an old-fashioned town. They still have one of those circa 1900 sirens sitting on top of the firehouse. Damn, those things are loud. Its awfully annoying at 3am.

A satellite picture of my home town, with the siren on the fire house and my bedroom identified.

          http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n152/nnielsen/homeshot.png

You get an idea of the scale from the cars. You could hear the siren two miles away; my room was less than 100 yards, probably closer to 50.

What you can’t see in the image is that the siren is on a tower and that tower and my bedroom window are not only at the same relative height, they are line of sight. And that house did not (and still does not) have air conditioning, so I slept with my window open whenever the overnight temps were above 70°F. When that thing went off, sleep was out of the question.

But hey, I didn’t mind. I got to see the fire trucks go out!

Oh man! That must have been so bad if you had the windows open. I’m a mile or so away from mine and it just wakes you out of a deep sleep.

I always think, WHY can’t they just use pagers, cell phones or something else. I understand the sirens on the firetrucks, but gone are the days where you need that to summon the firemen.

It must’ve been cool as a kid to see the fire trucks though. Every little boy’s dream.

That window was also high enough to see a good way down the street to the east. There were a couple of times I could see the fire too!

The siren also went off at noon every day except Sunday. We just suspended any kind of verbal transactions while it was going.

I was close enough that I heard it work its way up from the low audible to the about 800-900 HZ max frequency, so it wasn’t such a shock. I usually woke up about when it hit 60-70Hz

But in this case it’s the fringes of a Cyclone so it’s more or less understandable.

What isn’t however is the weeks of rain that has been happening previously. But none the less it’s helping to get the dams full. Currently the combined levels are at 97.4% which is a lot better than the 15% they where at a year or so ago. Now I want the Liars who pass themselves off as Politician’s to explain why the price of water has to stay so high and why we still have water restrictions. Yea I know we only have 10 years supply in the dams at the moment and we might not ever have any rain again. :^0

St Pat’s Day – my anniversary

It was St. Pats Day 9 years ago that I was reunited with a long-lost love – Guinness! My oldest daughter was in the elementary school band and I dropped her at the start of the parade route. I then walked a mile to stand in a good viewing location near the sponsoring bar. Since it was a while before the parade would start, I dashed in for a morning beer. As it was St. Pat’s, I thought “well, I haven’t had Guiness for many years, maybe I’ll give one a try!”

We’ve been happy together ever since. I’ve often dreamed that we’d vacation together in Ireland.

Sometimes, being on-call is a bitch

      by nicknielsen ·

In reply to Friday Hug – Part 3

Paged at 0945 for a semi-critical outage in Columbia and was able to defer it until Monday. Paged again 45 minutes later for a critical outage…in Myrtle Beach. HAD to go on this one.

An hour down the road, get paged again for another semi-critical outage in Columbia. Did the call at the Beach (25 minutes on site), then took the other two calls on the way home (23 minutes total on two sites). So, put in a full 8 hours and was driving for over seven of them. A day trip to Myrtle Beach makes for a damn long day.

Can’t complain too loud, though. It’s the first time I’ve been called out on a weekend since last year.

Beer and scotch are good things.

We are going to do the things he has always wanted to do. We are going to Alaska. We will head south and see the Bay Bridge and Ames Research Facility- where my father’s original Space Shuttle drawings may be accepted to the NASA museum.

We will cruise the Pacific after we have seen giant Sequoias. Then we will do Hollywood. And stuff… And see my family.

We are going back to the concept that enjoying life beats the heck out of talking about it.

And after all that, we’ll go to KY.

          This thing about islands

          by santeewelding ·

In reply to Australia, I hear

          Goes way back with me.

In Boston, there was a park with a pond — Jamaica Pond. The pond was small enough to walk completely around in an hour or so.

In the pond was an even smaller island.

My parents took we children — I was four or five — to the pond to feed the ducks (joyous days!). Whereupon, my mother told me the island was a floating island. Now, this was barely conceivable to my young, already scientifically-functioning mind. I disputed this with her: “How can that be?!”

Among other observations I marshaled to my argument was that dirt don’t float!

(I mastered these technicalities by having myself played in mud.)

She lost all credibility with me when, next, and furthermore, she told me, the pond had no bottom.

“It has to have a bottom!” I countered. “Otherwise, how can it be a pond? Where does it come out? Wouldn’t that be the bottom?”

I remember being adamant about it.

Well, except for the part about being told not to fall in, because I would never reach the bottom and, I would be lost forever.

For that reason I did not play in the pond as I did in the mud.

Then, this thing about islands tipping over and sinking comes up.

I may have been adamant, but I did learn way back then about standard reservation of scientific doubt.

Like, if the Seychelles will be when Shellbot gets there.

          In reply to Feeling better

As for the job thing, I understand.

I’m applying all over the USA (and even looking in Canada) for jobs. The job market in Florida is almost as bad as the housing market.

That’s another thing. Banks are continuing to screw over property owners by taking their foreclosure homes here…and pricing them WAY below market. Hence my house that should be worth about $115k-120k but is valued by the market at $90k is overpriced…

…because the banks are selling similar homes they took as foreclosures 2-4 years ago…for $50k.

I couldn’t sell my house if I wanted to. The market is flooded with existing, foreclosure homes, and until those are all gone my value will never come back.

So if I get another job away from here…I’m saying…$crew the banks. I’m dumping the house in the way that will least negatively affect my credit, and moving.

So anyways. I know how you feel. I am looking at having to leave here to improve my life.

She pushed my car back 3 feet; my tires actually left rubber on the asphalt. She never admitted to what happened, but I was listening to the conversation that she was having on the phone while she was looking for her insurance papers. I couldn’t believe it; well I could :_|

Oh, to top it off, she was going to drive away but some witnesses “held” her until I got there to trade info.

I told them that two tech people I know live up in Truro, and she knew right where that was. As well, she knew where Moncton, New Brunswick is where my buddy is from who’s a bluegrass player.

      Weekly update (((hugs)))

      by nicknielsen ·

In reply to Friday Hug – Part 3

Got a new work van last Friday. It had only 27 miles on it when I was loading it up. I’ll probably hit 1000 miles by Friday.

The good? Cruise, power package, stereo with CD and mp3 jack. Sweet. It’s good to listen to speakers instead of wearing headphones. The cage has a cutout so I can recline the seatback slightly more. Very nice, very comfortable.

The bad? Less usable storage. The racks in the back are different and I lose both a 15-inch by 6-foot shelf and a strip of floor space. That’s the difference between sliding things in next to each other, and stacking them, darn it.

The ugly? It has USB with MS Sync. Whoopee. I’ll probably only use the USB port to charge the mp3 when I’m in the stores…

My sons’ alma mater just won its first state soccer championship by defeating the four-time defending champions, 1-0, in two overtimes.

Weather’s not been too bad, sprinkles here and there. Radar shows the storms forming well to the east of us.

And they’re still playing hockey? But didn’t the play-offs start back in February? :0 (Getting to be as bad as basketball… 😉 ) At least the NHL is large enough now that the old joke about the regular season only needing to be long enough to weed out the bottom three teams before the playoffs doesn’t apply any more. With the Bruins, Sabres, and Rangers long out of it, and me congenitally unable to root for either Chicago OR Philly, there’s not much choice left… Go, Sharks! 😀

And I hear ya, the hockey season sure does run long now, with 30 teams, not much wonder it runs into June 😉 . When it comes to who to root for in winning the final round, I’m kinda behind Chicago (did you know that there are 20 Canadians on the Hawks?) But either way, as long as it’s anyone but the Habs, I’m good 😀 !

      So what next

      by shellbot ·

In reply to Friday Hug – Part 3

So..spent a few mins catching up in the thread started by the “maak” dude (or whatever his name is).

Its obvious I’m not around much any more, and frankly after that thread, I’m not sure I want to be around anymore.

TR used to be a great place, yes the odd squirmish, and few trolls, but generally it was good natured .. Now, some people have been so brow beaten, they have moved on, and these were long standing members.
I used to look forward to my daily foray into the world of TR, now I just check in once a week.
Now, some of this is due to ongoing personal issues, and a general attempt to “go off the grid”. Its amazing what happens when you turn off the computer, there’s life out there!

I did not add my comments to the post I refer to, because I feel I would ruffle feathers if I did. And this is my issue. I once felt such a part of this place that I felt I could say anything and it would be taken with a grain of salt and some consideration that each human being is entitled to thier own opinion.

Its turned into a schoolyard, with people taking sides, and if I am afraid to make a comment because I think members who I would call friends may turn on me, then why am i here at all??

I had nothing bad to post in the thread, it was simply an observation and a small attempt at keeping the peace, but from some of the repsonses others got, I don’t feel comfortable saying anything. Partly because I don’t want someone taking my side against someone else.

Maybe 3 months of self evaluation has changed me, maybe the destruction of my marriage has given me a new perspective of things.

We are all here for such a short time, we know this..we have lost memebrs who were friends..does this sort of carry on really enrich your lives? Does it make you feel good?
I’d rather share good things and have a chuckle, and be willing to suport someone if they need it..thats the type of thing that really matters in this life.

Maybe I’m outa line here..but whatever…we all make our choices.

I wish you all a good day and I hope something nice happens, whether it be a smile or a kind word.

Things often get worse before they get better, I have a long hard journey beginning soon, and hopefully with my husband by my side. We are both committed to making things work, but it will not be easy with the issues we are facing.
The best thing though, if it doesn’t work, i know I will be OK, and I am strong enough to get through everything.

Not sure why I had to give her daughter money the only thing I can think of is not only did I pay for the parts and repair the thing but I had to pay for for the privilege of fixing her car.

Something in that Female Logic escapes me as I always thought you paid for the parts and labor to repair your car, not get the parts & labor free and get paid by the person repairing the car for the privilege of fixing it.

With the weird weather we’ve been having, we actually had days in April where it was snowing in Calgary and hot (for April) at 28 degrees in Toronto.

Of course it isn’t cold all the time. We only tell people that to keep the tourists down to a minimum. There used to be jokes about Americans coming to the border in July with ski racks on their cars.

Couple thousand Kms from me, Purple has decent weather, we’ve had rain last few days. Gonna hit 32 degrees and sunny on the weekend in time for fathers day – perfect BBQ weather.

I’ve got a buddy that lives in Ft. McMurray, their weather can get quite cold for winters and they also have the really long hours of day light in the summer.

It’s kinda funny though, how the weather can be cold on the east coast and mild on the west coast during the winters, but our summers are almost the same except I have found the east coast to be more humid than the west. When we drove through BC a number of years ago, I was quite shocked to actually drive through a desert and it was really hot and dry (it was August).

I also spent a week in southern Ontario (Hamilton) back in the early 90’s, the weather was warm that year and there were a lot of thunder storms in the evenings, but it sure was pretty there. I loved it, would consider going back sometime and touring around the Niagra region a little more.

Where we are, -40 (not factoring wind chill) is a once a winter thing, usually at night.

He has pretty good rates. $35 for a complete LOF, $37 for the switch replacement. The biggest chunk of that was the troubleshooting time to discover the ignition switch was bad. And, of course, tax.

Had an ’86 Grand Am before the Escort: 4-cylinder, 5-speed. Lots of torque, ran great. Would love to still have it.

But the radiator fan relay died on the hottest afternoon of the summer while I was circling the block looking for a place to park at the courthouse (call response, not legal problem B-) ). No temp gauge, just an idiot light, so I didn’t catch it in time. When it overheated, it blew the head gasket.

At the time, the need for ‘a’ car was more important than the need for ‘that’ car, so I traded it in on the Escort. Although I’ve gotten great service from the Escort, I fit the Grand Am without altering the front seat and it was a blast to drive.

I should think you’d be able to find a local mechanic who can do the work at a less-than-dealer rate: Pep Boys, Sears, Firestone, or an independent. You can still get the parts from Advance, CarQuest, Auto Zone, or any NAPA dealer at a significant discount off dealer prices.

          Avoid the stealership

          by jamesrl ·

In reply to Thats a good deal

Most cars that have been produced for a while have a steady stream of parts, both the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) and aftermarket parts. Sometimes the OEM parts are better, sometimes not, sometimes they are inferior. When replacing the gaskets in my intrepid, the mechanic showed me the original oil soaked paper gasket that failed, and then showed me the fibre and steel wire reinforced replacement from aftermarket. The replacement cost me a whole $3 more than the OEM but would last forever.

Dealerships also do a profitable business selling parts to independants and even other dealerships, and that isn’t going to change.

So don’t be afraid to go to an independant.

I can find a cheaper mechanic. I always kept the car dealership maintained and its in great shape, so I bought out my Pontiac lease. I have too much fun driving it to let it go. I commute about 80 miles a day. Lots of highway driving. It helps to have a V6 supercharged engine when you have to get out of bad situations.

          by hal 9000 ·

In reply to Now that I don’t lease the car anymore . . .

All new cars have modifications introduced over their lives and the Reputable Dealer makes these changes during Routine Services at no cost to the owner.

If you do not take your car to the Dealer you can not get the Makers recommended changes made and have to wait till there is a recall notice issued which only happens with most models of cars after several fatal incidents. It’s much better to get the changes made by the dealer when they do the routine services than it is to have to wait for the possible recall notice to be issued which effectively means that you are far more likely to be one of those fatal incidents because you are waiting for the recall notice to be issued rather than having the changes made along the way.

When I worked for a Ford Dealer here there where over 300 modifications that had come through the works before we saw the first of the new models that they applied to. Little things from Automatic Gearbox changes for the electronics to major things like replacing front suspension Ball Joints that failed when driving over less than flat roads and caused incidents that where to say at best something that you didn’t want to be involved in. I remember attending one of these incidents where the car had rolled several times and none of it’s occupants walked away from. To make matters worse it wasn’t a failure of a Ford component but the component from one of their suppliers who supplied the same part to the GM Model range so it adversely affected all of the then current models in AU.

We did hundreds of these changes during Routine Services to prevent the owners or the cars drivers having problems latter. Just about all of these changes where done without the input from the owners complaining about something we just got the go ahead to perform any Recommended Modifications sent out by the factory. While the initial service costs may have been more than after market Repairs did we where not confined to Log Book Services but could do what was specified by the maker at no cost to the owner to make the ”New” car safer for them to use. The non-dealers do not have access to the Free Components of the Manufacturer reimbursed for Labor in fitting these modified parts. Quite often as the Car Maker doesn’t make these parts the Component Maker pays the Maker to make the changes. 😉

During the warranty period I agree

          by jamesrl ·

In reply to Just something to keep in mind about the Dealer

I don’t know about Australia, but in North America (Canada and US at least) any recall note is sent directly to the owner from the manufacturer.

During the warranty period, its a good thing from a records keeping perspective to use dealership service. It may result in fewer arguments if there is a disuputed warranty claim.

From my experience with dealerships, I had a hard time getting them to follow the steps in a TSB (technical service bulletin) that clearly addressed issues I had with the car. Now some dealers are better at this than others.

I’ve never heard of a situation in Canada/US where a part is replaced free unless its under warranty or a recall.

so much as accustomed to them. We started the week in the high 90s and will hit them again by Monday.

I stay in the A/C as much as possible, but at some point I have to get the laptop, tools, and parts, then walk from the van to the store. 🙁

Then I have to return to the van, put everything away, and climb in to what is now a sauna to go to the next call. :_|

is the community pools in the northeast. Most pools down here are at private clubs or the ‘Y’ and require more for entry than I’m willing to pay.

Sometimes I wish I could tow one behind the van…

          by av . ·

In reply to Theres nothing worse than a hot car

There are quite a few community pools, but they are so packed its like a circus, so hubby and I opted for a private pool club this year. It is so miserably hot here, there is no other way to survive being outside.

The Y’s up here cost just as much as a private pool club. Its ridiculous. I thought they were supposed to be cheaper.

Everything cost a fortune in NJ. The only state (I think) where you have to pay to walk on the beach.

          by michael jay ·

In reply to Theres nothing worse than a hot car

I have never heard of that one, got two weeks to go before I head to North Carolina’s outer banks, OBX, for two weeks of rest and relaxation, no fee to walk on the beach there.

The beach house is a bit pricey, but well worth it.

        • #2856864

You have to pay to get on all NJ beaches during the summer

          by av . ·

In reply to Theres nothing worse than a hot car

After 5pm, you can get on for free. It isn’t cheap either. Some beaches charge $8-10 a person, per day. Its the ultimate rip-off.

I never went to the NC beaches, but I hear they are beautiful. Even if the vacation house is pricey, its a bargain compared to what you would pay up here.

          I live between Y’s

          by nicknielsen ·

In reply to Theres nothing worse than a hot car

The one is 22 miles away and charges a $50 join fee and $31/month for an individual ($50 and $46/month for a family). The other is 32 miles away and charges a $75 join fee and $45/month for an individual; for a family it’s $100 and $65.

The nearest pool to me is at the local country club. It’s smaller than the Y and they don’t have a ‘pool only’ membership; since I don’t golf, that ain’t happening. There are church conference centers and numerous gated communities with private pools in the area, but nothing public within 40 miles. Publicly accessible indoor pools for year-round swimming? None that I’m aware of within over 100 miles.

If I ever hit the lottery, I’m going to saddle this town with a natatorium.

We’re experiencing monsoonal Mexican humidity along with 100+ temperatures, and I have no air conditioning. I get through it usually because the humidity is usually in single digits here.

What I hear is that a big high pressure sitting, stuck, over the four-corner region here is due to move out soon and grace you guys in due course. You are welcome.

we don’t often get single digit humidity (our humidity during the summer is normally double digits) here nor do we get 100+ temps, that would be brutal here on the east coast. There’s usually always some form of humidity here during the summer months. I only hope that your weather doesn’t wonder this far north…or east 😉 stay cool 😀 !

you were missed though while you were away…Darryl didn’t realize you were on holidays. Sounds like your vacation was enjoyable.

Darryl is on holidays this week. We took Sarah and Holly (plus a friend) camping over on the North Shore at Darryl’s mom’s cottage first of the week. It does kinda rock to camp at the beach 🙂 ! We had a pretty good time, had a camp fire on the beach and made s’mores; they were messy but tasty 🙂 !

My week finished up quite nicely. I went out Friday morning and closed a couple of calls, then checked Fedex for the status of my parts shipments. Fedex Ground normally doesn’t deliver to the house until late in the afternoon, but on Friday they delivered three–count’em, three–boxes of parts before 1100, most of them for calls that were a week old or older.

We’ve been on a strict no-OT diet for the past couple of months, but when I told my boss I had more parts than I had time, he said I could work “until you’re out of parts.” Didn’t get home until almost 10p last night, but closed a bunch of calls.

          Sweet. B-)

Just came home from the hospital; spent the evening with my oldest daughter and her boyfriend…they were in an accident this evening on their way to his home after they both got off work. Right now it’s a he said/she said story from both drivers (her boyfriend and the lady they rear ended). His Mom called to let us know they were at the hospital and what had happened, but to thankfully say they were both fine. I went out anyway to be with my girl, her boyfriend and his Mom and Dad while we waited to have her checked over. This evening I’m just very thankful that they are both OK and safely tucked in at his Mom and Dad’s; they’re great kids with a good future ahead of them.

I knew a doctor in Ottawa in the 80s who used to moonlight on the weekend at a hospital in cottage country, they had to pay bonuses to keep people working there.

Where state or federal governments will repay substantial parts of medical student loans on condition you spend your first several years of practice in areas that have trouble attracting medical professionals. There’s over 100,000 people here (or near that…used to be 130,000 but the housing/economic bust ruined that).

          There’s 2M+ 40 miles south of me.

They actually pay good here for doctors…and head floor nurses. But, the PAs, NAs, LPNs, techs, etc., get paid squat and are shifted around like salt in a shaker.

So if you want to be an RN and push a lot of paper all day instead of healing sick people, you can make a TON of money here (almost 6-figures).

Smoking is bad, but some people just don’t seem affected by it.

Its funny that you say musculoskeletal. My husband, who only smokes cigars once and awhile, once had a similar situation. He was shoveling snow like a madman and later on that day got chest pains. We spent the rest of the day in the hospital and after he passed all of their tests, the doctor’s said he had likely pulled all of the muscles in his chest.

Maybe you did something physical that might have had the same effect?

August The fishing tribes are given credit for the naming of this Moon, since sturgeon, a large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water, were most readily caught during this month. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because, as the Moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

        Got my story to tell…

Hurricane Carol in the 1950s when I was a boy.

The thing hit straight on the coast where I lived, passing directly over and around our little family in our snug New England house.

Winds: 125 mph, which by today’s measure, means it was a Three or Four. Hard to tell with all the howling.

We four kids were lined up, knees on the sofa, looking out the living-room window, watching an 1800s carriage house across the street. The carriage house was flanked by three mature oaks on each side.

First, the wind came one way. Three oaks down, partially crushing the carriage house. We lost a few shingles, and a tree in the back yard.

Then, quiet. Dad let us all out to stand in the front yard. “This is the eye,” he said.

The sun was shining, the sky was blue, and all was quiet. I could hear birds chirping (“Sonofablitch — did you see that?”).

“Alright,” my dad said, looking at his watch after about 20 minutes. “Back inside !”

Whereupon the wind came the opposite direction. The other three oaks on the other side — they finished the carriage house, debris howled away into the next state.

Nowadays, that’s what you do. You relocate to the next state.

60 mph is just short of 100 km/hr

          by nicknielsen ·

          In reply to so….

Quick and dirty conversion tip for miles and kilometers:

From kilometers to miles: multiply by six and drop the last digit. So, 50 km/hr x 6 = 300, drop a zero gives 30 mph

From miles to kilometers: append a zero and divide by six. So, 55 mph becomes 550. 550/6 = 91.6666, or ~92 km/hr.

You really appreciate the power of nature when you see something like that. You never forget it.

It sounds like the experience of a lifetime, Santee. Maybe one that you don’t want to repeat. Back then, no one ever evacuated. They just hunkered down and rode it out.

Hopefully, Earl will spare the east coast.

          wind stories

          by bergenfx ·

In reply to Me ! Me ! Me !

I really enjoyed your story, and in unexpected ways, too.

I can’t tell a story in the tenor or sincerity of this, so I have only to offer this change-up keeping true only to the wind topic.

We lived in Boulder, CO for a number of years. One to three times a year during the winter months we would experience extremely high winds, well over 100 MPH. They would be strong enough to overturn semis, knock down overpasses, etc. One of them flattened our basketball post, and it was not uncommon to see something like a galvanized trashcan riding on the breeze, as if it were a feather. If you wanted to have your car repainted, it was great because it was a sure way to have your car sandblasted.

But the worst one year was around Christmas. The wind unscrewed all the Christmas lights on a small pine in our yard, blew them over to the neighbor’s yard, and screwed them into their newly emptied strand.

I would tell you about the tornado experience, but you probably wouldn’t believe me.

Juan was only a cat 2 but they said it spawned a bunch of “mini-tornados”.

Nobody was prepared for it, we seldom get hit with anything bad here so everyone just sort of brushed off the warnings.

It came through in the middle of the night so we coludn’t really see much while it was happening but things sure were a mess the next morning.

Here’re a couple links to prictures from the Truro area….

Halfax got it worse than us, it made landfall there, we’re 60 miles inland but it tracked over us…..it took down many of the large Elm & Maple trees all over town.

It’s not so much Batten down the hatches!

        by hal 9000 ·

In reply to Ready for the hurricane?

As cleaning up anything that can be moved by the wind outside.

From my experience of Cyclones here it’s not the wind that is the problem but the people who don’t follow even the most basic practices to make the place safe during these events.

The wind by itself doesn’t do a lot of damage but when you leave things outside to be blown around they cause the widespread destruction that often accompanies these things. Start off with a rubbish bin left outside which blows into a car port and then the car port designates and the damage is a direct Down Wind path.

          We’re lucky

In reply to It’s not so much Batten down the hatches!

We have a 12′ x 8′ space enclosed on three sides by the house. Over time, we have discovered that it is an eddy space; no matter how strong the wind elsewhere in the area, or the direction, that area remains relatively calm. Anything too large to put inside goes there, heavy end down, with additional weight provided by cinder blocks.

We’ve had some storms come through, but never lost anything, not even the rubbish bin.

Purple & I had a pretty bad experience with Juan 7 years ago when it ripped up Truro & we were without power for a week….she’s not happy about Earl wanting to visit.

About 160 miles from the 2nd Avenue pier in Myrtle Beach, and about 120 miles from the Battery in Charleston, so we’re well off the coast. But we’re less than 60 miles from the path Hugo took through SC on its way to Charlotte.

I’m told we’ve had higher winds from thunderstorms than this area got from Hugo, but the same individual who told me this also hawks and spits when he sees ‘that damnyankee’. Me. 🙂

but the problem for us is the trees still have leaves on them this time of year….it knocks them over & pops the roots up through the roads & sidewalks….makes quite a mess.

I just don’t know why people don’t heed the warnings

          by av . ·

In reply to It’s not so much Batten down the hatches!

If I had a boat, I would take it out of the water. I’ll never understand why some people don’t do that when they’ve had sufficient warning.

I’ll never forget being hit with a microburst at home a few years back. My husband was barbequing in the backyard and I was in the house. I opened my front door and saw that across the street the trees were bending in half with the wind and there was visible debris flying around. It was a Wizard of Oz moment. I told my husband to get in the house NOW!

In a matter of seconds, the wind topped off huge trees in our yard and they were flying sideways. We ran to the basement and all I can remember is the suction of the storm trying to pull the roof off.

Minutes later when it was over and we went outside, the wind had actually pulled the gutters off of the house and destroyed part of the frame. We were very lucky. The guy next door had his entire deck pulled off and destroyed and a tree fell on his house.

Ever since then, I am very careful if there are weather warnings. Things can get bad really quick.

And some people think that I don’t like trees

          by hal 9000 ·

In reply to I just don’t know why people don’t heed the warnings

Because they see me cutting them down. Only ones that I bother with though are ones that are within striking distance of the house or ones that will go to within striking distance of the house.

I don’t care about others but you can be certain if a tree can fall on a house that it’s going to at some stage so I like to remove the chance of that happening.

Could be maybe that I was in a brick house asleep when a tree fell on it and I got buried in broken bricks. 😀

Or I moved north but this time I was way inland the other side of a Mountain Range as the coastal areas got hit by cyclones very regally so way inland was going to be ”Safe” and within the first month we where hit by a cyclone. 🙁

          Just couldn’t take a trick. :^0
