From 2000 to 2003 AD.....HELP

By Gussss ·
I'm about to bring a new server 2003 into my 2000 domain, I will be retiring both 2000 AD servers (Replicating servers - PDCs)) after the upgrade.
I know about the migration tool from Microsoft but I need to know about any known issues that anyone has encounter, is there any order of steps I should follow, I'm doing as much research as i can before the jump. Thanks

You really don't need the migration tool. Just make sure your 2000 DCs are up to date as per the following KB article:

Good luck.

After running Domainprep and Forestprep from Windows 2003 cd, run Dcpromo on your new 2003 server to become a DC in the existing domain. After replication has occured you then need to run DCPromo on the 2000 DCs to remove them from the Domain.

boy, from what i can see browsing the mskb at support.microsoft.com 'windows 2003 server' 'migrate', i wouldn't touch that migration tool with a ten foot pole.
did you see this? it doesn't sound like what you are asking for in the title, but worth scanning the text. chock full of reminders of how to avoid gotchas. like: os and apps patched to latest greatest? time synched? antivirus disabled? windows 2000 schema update enabled? and so forth and so forth. good luck.

Be aware that if you are running Exchange 2000 on your W2k domain, you will need to make some changes to the schema before starting the adprep /forestprep and adprep /domainprep. You will need to open the active directory schema console on the Operations Master, right-click active directory schema, click Operations Master, and check "The Schema may be modified on this domain contoller". You will then need to run interorgpersonfix.ldf. More on all of this can be found here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;325379

I'm finding more and more problems as I go through the process of converting to 2003. Too many to list easily. I will compile a list of the most notable issues I come across and post more as time goes on.

Their is no need to use any "Active Directory Migration Tool" all you need is to setup additional domain controller in the same forest, after configuring the new windows server 2003 domain controller make sure it is replicating in the "AD Site and Services" so that it can see all the DC. Transfer all FSMO role (SCHEMA, PDC EMULATOR, etc...) to the new Windows Server 2003 DC, make it a Global Catalog. Demote the Windows 2000 server (make sure that all FSMO roles in the Windows 2000 server are tansferred before demoting the dc). That's all...
