Front and Rear view to Exchange 2003

By fuzzylogic ·
Question, I have an exchange server and I want to setup OWA, do I need to have a frontend server or can I achieve the desired result from a single server? If yes is there any good guides to achieve this?

No you don't need a front end server

Just load and configure OWA on the exchange server or on to another IIS box and you'll be just fine.

You need to understand the idea behind front end and back end servers. The front end server is more or less a Proxy for connections into and out of the mail site. It makes it super easy for large organizations to configure their user connections to the Exchange environment. The Front End server doesn't hold accounts it just directs connections to the appropriate mail store server. it's also good for centeralized transmition and reciept of SMTP traffic and Anti-Virus.
