FTP nightmares

By Sereniti ·
Our IT guy dropped off the planet and I've been pressed into service until we can find a new one ? I?m ?just? the webmaster. Help!

We have a LAN (Windows Server 2003) and a Cisco PIX firewall. They were never configured completely properly and I don't know how to troubleshoot them.

I can FTP to all our web sites using my workstation using Dreamweaver, Firefox's FireFTP, and Adobe Contribute CS3. My boss wants to use Contribute CS3 to collaborate on our web sites. So this morning I installed it on his laptop and configured it.

When it tries to connect, a dialog box opens and says, "The server is down or not accepting any connections," even though I'm connecting as noted above from my own computer.

I installed Firefox on his laptop, added FireFTP and attempted to ftp into the site. It says, "Unable to connect."

I tried from IE 7.0 - also unable to connect.

The laptop is connected to the Internet in exactly the same manner that my workstation is connected. It goes through the same firewall.

I know this isn't enough information, but I?d like someone to please point me in the right direction to at least start troubleshooting this.

The configuration for both Contribute CS3 and FireFTP on his laptop are identical to the configuration for those programs on my work station. It works flawlessly on my work station, it doesn't work on his laptop.

is it giving the 530 error "Please tell me who you are"? Can you connect with your password from a different computer in your shop or at home?

All of this information you're asking is in the original post

I'm able to FTP from within our network from every computer except my boss's laptop. It is not a username/password issue. I'm not getting a 530 error.

As stated before, Contribute CS3's error message says, "The server is down or not accepting any connections" - this within moments before and after I disconnect from a successful connection from my work station over the exact same network as the laptop. There are no other users connected via FTP or in any other manner when I make the attempt from the laptop.

FireFTP simply says it can't connect, with no other error message than that.
