FTP Slowness

By bheyman ·
Macs ftp upload/download very slow to Windows 2000
Information Server 5.0 svc pack 3, internal and external
IP addresses, hardware firewall. No problem w/ PC's.
This happens w/ Fetch and captain FTP on OS 9.2.2
and 10.2.5. The problem seems to be Mac related.
Passive / active same results. Even tried hooking
directly to the same pc ethernet connection on which i
tested the PC speed as well as an outside connection.
What is causing this?

What kind of nic? Is it set to a specific speed? Default? Max handled by your network?

100 Bas-T full duplex. *I found out that port 20 is closed.
While I'm waiting for that to be opened, is it possible
that the windows nodes are handshaking to a different
available port easily while the macs are having a hard
time doing that?

You will want to insure your switch ports are set to
whatever the workstations are set to (i.e. if set to full 100
on Mac OS X - set switch speed to full 100). This assumes
you are using 10/100 switches. Most speed issues
between Windows and Mac on FTP are related to FTP
application handshaking or to network settings on switches
and routers (when on internal network).

Everything is 100 Base -T full dupex. Same story w/ OS 9 nodes.
Internal or external. Windows nodes fly.
