FTP works, but not WWW

By yechenglin ·
A Gateway 5100 desktop. Road Runner Cable modem connected to PC directly using ethernet cable. The onboard NIC is dead(when owner replace the power supply, something went wrong?). Installed Netgear FA311 NIC.
1. PC acquire IP address intermittenly, ping www.yahoo.com works. Dropped connection, no internet connection(www or ftp or instant messenger). Cable replaced and tested OK with another PC(internet works). Still no WWW connection, but IP address acquired/renewed easily, can ping www.yahoo.com.
2. Move the Gateway PC to another home, connect to router to DSL connection. Internet works(both www, ftp), but download speed is very slow(under 10kb/s). Found 140 virus/240trojan horse/adware/spyware. Removed using AdAware, Norton antivirus. Still not working. Run system file checker, DLLregister, etc., not working.
3. Brough back home. Restored using Gateway Operating System CD(Windwos XP Media Edition, SP2 integrated). No www connectitive. FTP works just fine, IPCONFIG shows DNS server and IP address. Ping www.yahoo.com works. Connected to RoadRunner cable modem. Cable and Modem are known to be good by connecting to another computer.

Anything else to try?

Run the New Connection Wizard again you'll find it under the Accessories and then Connections in the start menu. This time when you run it set the computer to Auto Load IP address and it wouldn't hurt to first install the following Networking protocols NetBios and IPX/SPX protocols before you run the Internet Connection Wizard.

But when you do run the New Connection Wizard chose Manual install and work through the settings as you go allow the computer to Auto Detect the required fields the only thing that you will not need is to enable File & printer Sharing if you are given that option.

Of course a clean system will work much better than an infected one every time and just using Ad aware may not have removed all the Mal ware so try Spy Bot Search & Destroy available at

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

and you can try the MS Beta Spy Ware Removal software available from

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=321cd7a2-6a57-4c57-a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en

As well as your AV products.

I run the Norton antivirus scan and Grisoft AVGantivirus, both reported clean after removing a lot of virus. No firewall had been turned on, and the only thing doesn't work is web sites. HighjackThis log show clean after the malwares are removed. FTP site works using Internet Explorer. I did run the MS AntiSpyware, using the Browser restore tool. Found a lot of malware, removed it, and restore the IE using the tool. Not working. Firefox doesn't work either.

The Gateway Operating System DVD works by booting from DVD, delete all partitions, then create a single partition to install XP. Right after installation, run Norton Antivirus again using only the definition from the CD. No virus found. No WWW, but FTP works just fine. I can ping websites,IPCONFIG shows all the informations a normal connection should have. Can't update the Norton.

wow. my knee jerk response is some kind of firewall issue. or spyware. but you say you reinstalled completely (right?) using XP Media Edition xp2 cd.
so i am stumped.
does pop2 email work? somehow i bet it does...
it looks to me like you have covered all the bases and proved the hardware works. Only thing left is firewall. or spyware or hijack...i wonder if you are getting reinfected almost instantly...
if not spyware then how could a firewall be coming into place (since you have turned off the xp firewall for a test already, yes?).
well, i had a similar symptom (everything looks right but no internet) a while back when I installed a firewall product (ZoneAlarm Pro v5 i think). when i uninstalled it, i lost all internet connectivity. reinstalling the firewall product and uninstalling it again fixed things up. i am just putting that out there just in case you have (or had) a third party firewall product on there...)
Have you tried another browser. like netscape or foxfire. emptied the internet cache and no spyware at the moment?
you sound like you know what you are doing so all i can offer is everytime this type of thing has happened to me, it's been firewall.
media center huh? who knows then...that seems to be quite a different animal...

i meant pop3 you know.
and make sure you test wholes bunches of sites, not just yahoo, yes? empty the Temporary Internet Files
I bet i know what it is:
go turn off 'discover proxy' or whatever it is, in your IE connection settings...

here is where i mean:
IE Tools/Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings/uncheck 'Automatically Detect'
or check it if it's unchecked...

You say the bad nic was part of the motherboard. Did you try going into BIOS and disabling the onboard nic and then just for good measure reinstall the replacement nic. May not work but it may be worth a shot.

Try running winsock fix. It restores a corrupted internet connection caused by malware. I have used it successfully a few times. Download it here:

Hmm, I have had a similar problem strike me a few days ago around Oct 6th.

My PC runs XP Pro, has a realtek onboard NIC.

Suddenly out of the blue, the internet www is slow. A page seems to take hours to load and almost always is timing out.

FTP works - the login and listing works, but I am unable to upload any files - its timing out.

POP mail - downloads all emails but very slowly. none of my outgoing emails are being sent. its timing out again.

I got the internet connection checked with another XP run laptop and it works fine.

I then formatted the C drive, reinstalled everything from scratch and STILL the problem persists. I am getting a feeling that the onboard NIC is kaput..

did you find a solution to the problem?
