Gateway PC with CD drive Stuck open

By kenrankin ·
I have a Gateway desktop pc (circa 2001) with a CD drive that will not shut. Any help would be appreciated.

Most likely, the gear train for the CD tray is jammed or broken.

Realistically, your best option is to replace the drive.

You can find CD-ROM drives for under $20 and CD-RW drives for under $30 at a number of on-line computer parts stores.

If you have the mechanical aptitude, you can try opening up the drive and may be able to get the gears back into alignment. Of course, if the gears are damaged, you will have no choice but to replace the drive.

OK SO U ARE RLLY MAD BECAUSE UR DRIVE IS STUCK.
1ST YOU OPEN IT UP SO THERE IS NO METAL CASING.
2ND YOU GRASP THE PART WHERE IT USED TO SAY THE
BRAND NAME (SONY, TOSHIBA, ECT, AND SOMETHING LIKE COMPACT DISC REWRITEABLE +.
3RD YOU ARE STILL GRASPING AND YOU GENTLY, AND I ENPHISIZE GENTLY, BECAUSE YOU COULD DAMAGE THE LENSE (IT?S BEST NOT TO GO NEAR IT OR YOU DRIVE WILL BE CORRUPT) THEN TRY TO PULL BACK AND FORTH GENTLY.
4TH IF THAT DOESN'T WORK THEN YOU REPEAT STEPS ONE AND 2 BUT NOW INCREASE FORCE TILL IT COMES FREE.

Does that method work on the CapsLock key?..

If it does, perhaps YOU should try it.

Sad that you feel the need to lecture on fixing (destroying) hardware, when you evidently can't repair your own keyboard!
