Getting ready to go......

By DistinctDispatches ·
I am getting ready to make my server-move to Windows 2000 from WinNT. Please note that this is the first time such an update has been my sole responsiibilty with no one else to side-kick me. Being a chicken (coward of the county here), I would liketo run both servers in parallel while I work out the bugs.

Is this a good idea and what's the best way to implement this.

TYIA

Ralph

Getting ready to go......

Try to find an old system which is just good enough to be a backup domain controller (BDC)
Install it as a bdc, take it offline, synchronise the domain !!!, and take it offline.
Install the new machine which will be your w2k domain server as a nt4bdc, promote it to a pdc (w2k needs to be installed on the pdc), upgrade it to w2k, run dcpromo.exe, promote it to a domain controller (note that there's no pdc, or bdc anymore here), and you are up and running.
When you're satisfied create the dhcp scope on the w2k server but do not activate it until the friday evening if your lease duration is shorter than 96 hours (dhcp clients will ask for a new lease if 50% of time is reached).Do not forget to disable the scope on the nt 4 server.
Copy the data, shares login scripts, whatever, and make a test run when the bdc is offline.
When everything is ok for 101% you keep the system yust in case for some time.
After that do whatever you want with it, and youre ready to switch the domain to native mode. (be carefull about the consequences, lookup m$ technet, all the answers are there)
Now I only need to wish you good luck, don't be afraid, but be sure.

Good luck,

Ron.
