Going hunt’en, how about you?

    Locked

    by jdclyde ·

Well, rifle season is upon us again.

I am a little bummed out that only Thing One is going with me this year. Thing Two is going through “growing issues” and has decided he doesn’t WANT to go this year. I am not about to make him, but it sure isn’t going to stop me from having a good time.

Got a cabin lined up, so a warm, secure place to watch DVDs, sleep and eat is all set to go.

Will by my bud, myself, and Thing One this year.

Still no snow here in Michigan, and looking at the forecast it doesn’t look promising.

Took the boy to the range over the weekend to get Grandpa’s old 30-30 sighted in and get him used to handling and shooting it (in that order. safetysafetysafety.) I had to make one adjustment to it because it was shooting high, and then I was knocking out the bullseye at 50 yards. Then was the boys turn, and he was jerking the trigger, so we had to work him through that. by the end, he was getting a pattern about the size of a quarter, but about five inches to the right. I think that is the difference between me shooting right handed and him having to shoot left (he is left-eye dominate).

Heading up Friday night. Got too much going on to make opening day, between his school and my work. Not a big deal, so I took off the following monday to make it a three day weekend. Oh yeah, friday nights is fish fry and sat is prime rib at the local mom/pop restaurant…. mmmmm. Besides that, we make out own.

The next weekend? Got to be home for Thanksgiving ( The boys are stuck with their mother for thanksgiving day, and I will rescue Thing One that night so we can leave first thing Friday morning.

Looking forward to getting out in the woods, and to be able to share this with my boys is a real thrill, and something I never got to do with my own dad (cancer Aug, 1980)

We didn’t get to go bow hunting this year because of my shoulder after my accident a few weeks ago. Still can’t pull back a bow yet. ( which was a real pain because I have TWO new bows that I have not been able to shoot!)

Will you be hitting the woods this year? Maybe Small game? Bow? Muzzle loading?

You just know what was going through my mind when I read “muzzle loading” don’t you…..

      Pass the screen wipes…..

      Again.

No hunting where I live….. shame, considering the cost of venison over here!

Have a great time – and be careful with the shoulder even with the gun.

is always a good thing! ;\

Shoulder is fine because it is the LEFT shoulder that bothers me, and I shoot right handed.

So, is there hunting AT ALL, just not in your area?

        • #2475757

          Not really….

          by gadgetgirl ·

          In reply to Loading muzzles

There doesn’t appear to be enough space for us humans to live on, and animals too. There are a few select places but they’re mainly now considered to be an “upper class” type of thing

(unless you’re well in with the local gamekeeper)

Scotland still does huntin’ shootin’ and fishin’ but again, it’s not as prolific as it used to be.

Oh, and every licence costs half a fortune…..!

Oh well. Back to throwing darts at the rubber duckie…. :p

I knew which shoulder – but recoil affects BOTH shoulders (compensatory) just in different ways…. I’d take a heat pack, just to be on the safe side, ok?

This is all your fault. I’m sitting here thinking how long it is since I had veal and venison and grouse and peasant and phartridge….. bloomin’ starvin’ now! 😉

          😡

          by jdclyde ·

          In reply to Not really….

          I haven’t had any venison since last night…. :p

got the heat backs all set to go, as well as my heating pad that I ALWAYS take with me. I like to throw it in my bed about 20 minutes before time to crash so I have a warm bed to hop into!

As for recoil, I went with a lower grain this year. For where I will be, I don’t need the big boys. I also wear my vest OVER my cloths for extra protection. Grandpappies old 30.06 that he gave me kicks hard! With any luck I won’t have to fire? ;\

Some nice venison tips DOES sound so good right now…. or some venison fajitas…. mmmmmmm! B-)

If I want, I could hunt about 5 miles from my house, but we head up further, about an hour and a half up. Plenty of hunting in Michigan, just a shortage of public land in lower Michigan. Still leaves over 90% available.

Just when I really fancy venison, I’m going home to roast gammon…

and yorkshire puds, roast potatoes, asparagus, sugar snap peas and cauli.

oh, nearly forgot – gravy too.

Hope that made you as hungry as you made me! 😀 😀 :p :p

is I have been thinking all day of the carrot cake ThingOne wants me to make for his Cross-Country banquet this wednesday.

I can’t believe things have gotten so bad in the school district that the banquets have turned into a half pot-luck for the sides and deserts. 🙁

Anyways, got to cook the cake tonight so it has time to cool to frost for tomorrow and take in on Wed. Probably make TWO. ]:)

Note to self: need carrots and cream cheese….. and walnuts…..

      Deer season is over here

      by tig2 ·

In reply to Going hunt’en, how about you?

Well- not exactly correct- it is over for us. He went up first and second weekend. I stayed home. Just wasn’t up to climbing a tree this year.

Small game is open to the end of the year. We may get out for grouse yet again. Maybe even bunny but they are way more difficult to find.

I think that I will hang out in the truck in my blaze orange (looks good with my hair) and re-read Wicked and Son of a Witch.

Or my OS X books. Yeh, that’s the right thing!

Have fun with the Thing. Maybe the other Thing will come along and spend his day in the cabin. Maybe he needs to hear that he doesn’t have to go out and kill anything, just enjoy camp.

      A thought.

      Edit. Missed a capital.

I think it is more him not wanting to be away from being able to IM his little friends, because there isn’t any internet.

He has chosen to do that over many other activities over the last year, so I am to the point where I make it clear that the internet will be disconnected while I am gone because sitting in front of the computer all day long is not an option, unless your getting paid for it.

But was not going to make a fight about it right now, so he will be stuck at his female-parental-units sugardaddies loveshack instead.

be at the beach for Thanksgiving this year. We usually spent Thanksgiving with my mother in law. Since she recently passed away, I thought it would be nice for us to go away somewhere completely different and try to have fun.

The big boy just got a promotion, he’s going to start managing a local Subway next week. he’s pretty excited, he gets quarterly bonuses, blah blah blah.. I’m happy for him.

Santa Rosa Beach. Kind of between Destin and Panama City. I’m sure it will be chilly in the mornings and chilly in the evenings. I don’t care. It beats sitting at my desk.

It’s supposed to be in the 50s here next week. Today was awesome, high 60s. Nothing like mid-November is supposed to be.

C’mon global warming, don’t let me down! I’m not even looking forward to the heating bills.

Just because I’m bored I’ll tell you, we bought a corn stove last year and hooked it up thru the fireplace in the living room. Keeps the chill out of the old place. Corn went up a quarter to $5.00/bushel and I can get as much as I want 8 miles from here.

Pretty exciting isn’t it? Bet you’re glad I told you. Did I mention that I’m bored? Think I mentioned that.

      All you Bambi killers…

      Kidding.

Had you started too didn’t I?

I even have my huntin’ shotgun out on consignment. Hoping to sell it before Christmas. It’s more of a heavy-duty self-defense weapon anyway.

I’m not hunting. Wish you luck and good times. I hope everybody gets one. That’ll make for less deer to slam into my truck.

There’s certainly enough deer to go around. My son-in-law farms 5000 acres and they chase up small herds of them everyday with the farm equipment. Farmers are glad to be rid of them. Pests that happen to be good to eat.

        by jdclyde ·

In reply to Nope. Not me. Don’t hunt.

that Bambi would be so taste? 😀

It just about kills me how thoughtless many of the anti-hunters are about the whole process. If they really are interested in preservation and how things work, they would think about what happens to ANYTHING when you remove all natural predators (like we have done for Deer in much of the country)

Not enough state land for me to go down that way and don’t know the locals to ask to hunt on the private. I do see enough deer down there though, dead on the side of the road. 🙁

Selling toys. I recently tried to sell one of my guitars, but because there isn’t a strong demand locally for a 7 string guitar, they only offered me $50 for a guitar that I could buy on-line for around $500. X-( Dang thing went for around $1200 new (not that I bought it new, I traded an old server for it! 😀 )

          by ontheropes ·

In reply to How would have thought

          Hate to sell them too.

I had a Ruger Stainless Ranch-rifle on consignment that sold overnight. It put snow tires on my ride. When the shotgun sells it’s just money in the bank. Eventually I’ll have enough to buy the Mac Pro that I want. Something to look forward to.

My Mother knows how to cook deer by how old they are. My Dad would always tell her. Young or old they’re all good eating.

I was raised on venison and wild-game until my Dad died. He’d go to Canada and get a moose and deer every year on top of the deer that he’d get in Michigan. That along with the rabbits he’d get really trimmed the grocery bills.

When you get deer do you save the heart? It’s great on crackers with a little mustard or just put it into sausage. Maybe it’s an acquired taste but you might want to try it. Just boil in salted water until cooked. Slice very thin into cracker-size bits. Good stuff especially when eaten with a cold brew to wash it down.
