Google Chrome Problem Solved: Your preferences cannot be read.

ellrllgllo
Being that I am a new TechRepublic member and this is my first post, I just (about 30 minutes ago) encountered a Google Chrome error that I have never seen before. When I opened Google Chrome, an error message window appeared that stated,"Your preferences cannot be read. Some features may be unavailable and changes to preferences won't be saved."

I typed "chrome your preferences cannot be read" into the Search Community field with All Community selected on the TechRepublic website and no results were returned. So I thought I would pass along what I did to solve the problem.

Obviously, I'm using a Windows operating system (Windows 7), or I wouldn't be having these problems to begin with. To start this off, close your Chrome browser.

1. For those of you still on Windows XP, select Start and then Run. Then enter the following: "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\". You could also enter the above line into a Windows Explorer window.

2. For Windows Vista, 7, or 8 users, select the Start circle as I call it and enter "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\" into the Search field or as I mentioned for XP users, simply enter it into a Windows Explorer window.

Find the directory named Default in the User Data directory and move it or rename it(I renamed mine Default_orig),

Reopen your Chrome browser and Chrome will create a new Default directory. If you're a good Chrome user like I am, then once you log back into Chrome with your Google ID, your settings, bookmarks, and all that fun stuff will be quickly repopulated or will require you to do very little to return your Chrome browser to its original state. If you so choose, delete the original Default directory that you moved or renamed for good system maintenance,

      Hi to all,
I also had the problem o Chrome not starting, after renaming the Default folder it started working. The only problem is that every time I restart the PC Chrome doesn't work again and have to rename AGAIN the Default folder.
Can somebody help me with this?
      Thanks.

Thank you for this because I have just had the same problem with both opera and Chrome... I find this happeneds when you're not signed into your Google Gmail account. If you log into your Google Gmail account the error message goes away.

Actually the best way if to go %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default Just thought I would point this out.

.. I usually created a new profile to reset my preferences! Then I copied the old profile over the new one, et voila, everything worked again.

Though initially it was rejected, but Change of Folder Name got successful and the problem resolved. Please ignore my earlier communications. Thanks for the guidance and help.

On my attempt as guided above, the folder named "Default" is not allowing name change or delete. Even, on going to its Properties , my attempt to change the attribute "Read Only" was not successful. It reappears after changing. Please guide me ,what to do now.
Sir, I got it done through the same process subsequently. My subsequent comments may please be viewed. Thanks.

      hi,
I don't know if it's the case, but you need to close chrome to change the folder's name.
copy the steps if you need to.

hi, thank you for your post!
      it was very useful.
before changing the name to the "default" folder, I've saved my bookmarks into an html file, so to import them back again.

The ingenious bull antivirus Scan technology is now enhanced to combine behavioral and characteristic inspection and monitoring of unsafe programs. This results in a clean, more up-to-date and accurate detection of threats.

Users can now import bull antivirus security settings from a single computer and export it to other computers. This is helpful in cases where reinstallations or multiple computer configurations are concerned.

Hi, thank you for your advice, it was useful.
For me, this also worked: deleted newly created folder and just renamed back the old one from Default_orig to Default and I didn't have to adjust anything.
      Cheers!
