Hard Disk Needs Formatting: Is Data Retrieval Possible Before Formating?

reachoppy
My laptop has refused to boot and internal recovery couldnt be done. The Recovery discs i created when i got the laptop was employed but the laptop couldnt read from the disc. The Hard disc was removed and attached to an adaptor and connected to another laptop via usb. The laptop read the hard drive, revealing 3 partitions or so: System(f), Hard disc(g) and Recovery(h). The partitions opened except Hard Disc(g). Think the system attempted opening it and eventually said something like 'the disc needs to be formatted'. Please, i dont want to loose my data, what can i do to retrieve my data? My laptop is a windows 7 system. Thanks all.

Yes you can retrive your data though its a bit tricky. You might need some help on this. Remove your hard drive from the laptop and connect it to another computer as an external hard disk. Windows is most likely to see it and you can then copy your data. When done, take the hard disk to your original laptop, put it back in the machine and you are ready to format.

Some data recovery software can recover the files without the need to format the HDD.
Check this article, as i remember one of the software in the article can recover from something like this.

Make sure you recover data first before formatting. You can google for data recovery software, there are lots of them.

You can try this one, the free version will at least let you know if the data is recoverable. Install on another computer and attach the failing drive as external drive.

There are other recovery tools (software) that can attempt to read the drive.

Don't format the drive. There are some options to read data from already formatted drive but I wouldn't go there yet.

For cases like this where I don't want to take out the drive, I also boot with Linux (Knoppix) boot CD - I use it to log in on the broken machine and see if the drive data is recoverable with Linux built in utilities orat least to give me an idea if there is a SMART failure.
