hard disk problem

I've been using this hard drive as a slave for a long time & suddenly i can't open it.The drive is spinning & it can autodetect
but i can't open it in windows enviroment,I get a message "device attached to system not functioning-format hdd".On properties it shows 0 bytes used space & 0 bytes free space. Please help .

Sounds like the drive crashed. Take a look at the download offered here at TechRepublic called 200 Ways to Revive a hard drive.

Have you tried to access it through a DOS prompt? Or trying to boot with a Win98 Startup disk and trying to access it that way? Is it attached to a IDE controller that may have had its driver deleted?
What OS are you using? I had a userchange permissions on a shared drive last week using NT 4.0 and had the same problem. Once I reset the permissions, the problem went away. Just some thoughts for you. Roger

Either the drive crashed (my bet), hardware connecting drive went bad, or you have a virus on the slave drive. I would see if your PC can see the drive in DOS then run a virus checker on it. Finally I would try fdisk /mbr from DOS on that slave drive.
