Hard drive audit

I am looking for a piece of software or tool to audit a hard disk in other words I need to find out what went on there.

You mean you want to perform software inventory?

The commercial tool for that is Altiris Inventory Solution. Altiris has a central server and performs daily software inventory through an agent installed on each PC.

For normal Windows apps you just look at 'add remove programs list' and you get most of them that way.

Microsoft makes a free tool to tell you what Microsoft programs are installed.
