Hard Drive Error-boot record

I have this Fujitsu hard drive… seems the boot record has been corrupted. The data is valuable. Is there a way to retrieve the data with out wiping out the Hard drive. It is running windows 98. When the system is turned on it says looking for boot record and then it comes to the A:\ and ask for boot record. Help

Start by installing the drive as an extra drive in a working system.
If just the MBR is bad, you should still be able to recover the data and back it up.

Otherwise, you can try to recover the Master Boot Record by booting up from a W98 startup disk, and running the fdisk command with the MBR switch.

fdisk /mbr

There are many good methods listed to get that 1 extra boot so that you can back up the data on the drive.

I just have something to add to what Chas said. It is possible you might have a bootsector virus, in which case if you put in an unlocked floppy boot disk into your computer, you will transfer the virus from your computer to the floppy and back again. Make sure the floppy boot disk you use was made off of a virus free operating system, and make sure you have locked all of your floppy disks you use after that too.
