Hardware - DVD Burner connected to onboard SATA vs PCI Express SATA ?

By patihk19 ·
I have an ASUS M2nPV-MX board. This board had 4 SATA ports onboard. I bought a PCI Expres SATA controller as I needed more SATA ports. The Controller is this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/4-Port-SATA-SERIAL-ATA-IDE-PCI-CONTROLLER-RAID-I-O-CARD-/350444316016?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item51981be570

When I plug my DVD optical drive on the onboard SATA it plays DVD and I am able to burn also. When I plug the DVD optical drive on to the PCI Express card, I am able to play DVD s but not able to burn.

My system has two DVD drives and the same result with both of them when , when I plug into PCI express card - cant burn , when I plu into onboard SATA - able to burn.

To your motherboard directly. Only connect harddrives to your SATA extension card.

Are you saying that this is a known problem and the DVD drives will not work/burn when connected to a PCI-e sata controller ?

What exactly do you mean by Can't Burn?

The Software doesn't open to allow burning or the Burn Fails?

Also what happens if you plug a HDD into the SATA Card? Does it work correctly?

I have windows 7 installed. When the DVD drive is plugged in to an oboard sata I am able to burn files and read files on DVD discs. When the drive is plugged in to a sata port on the PCI-e card, I am able to opken and play DVds but I am not able to drag files from explorer and burn to it. The PCI-e card that I am using is one like this :

As suggested above

Plug the DVD Drive/s into the M'Board connectors and not the Controller Card.

There is a problem here with the Data Transfer speed and the way that the Hardware is being recognized by the OS. Most likely because the OS was written before there where PCI Express SATA Controller Cards and it's having issues with the way that the Drivers are accessing the Hardware.

If you look at the M'Board SATA Connectors they should be labeled from 0 to 3 or 1 to 4. The Boot Drive should be in the lowest Number SATA Connector and the Optical Drive that you want/need to Boot from should be in the next highest Number. This is just how the Hardware works.

is the boltin session burner disabled on that drive letter?

by Who Am I Really In reply to Hardware - DVD Burner c ...

under XP (don't know about win7)
- only the first CD/DVD writer was enabled by default
if you had more than one CD/DVD burner you had to go through the properties of each drive and select the recording tab to enable the XP CD session burner

"Are you saying that this is a known problem and the DVD drives will not work/burn when connected to a PCI-e sata controller ?"

The fact is your burner can not burn due to the ROC (Raid on Chip) on the card. Play disks? yes. Burn? no. It is best to keep the DVD/CD connected to your motherboard for playing/burning and video that way the extension card can extend your computers compacity with the Hdd's. The extension (Raid card) was not intended for Dvd drives, just harddrives.
