HCF Modem

By dela ·
I hope someone can help me with this. I recently ordered Linux Mandrake 8.0. I would really like to try this OS and see how it works for me. My problem is: My computer id a Dell Demension 700CX celeron Processer with a Conexant HCF PCI Data\Fax winmodem. Everything I have read states that an HCF winmodem will not work. Is this correct or is there a way to make it work? I do have an external Spartan 2400bps modem but I don't have any software for it . Given to me without the cords or software. Ihave tried to get it to work with Windows ME but it does not recognize the external modem. So I need some options here as to what to do next. I also am not sure what the external modem needs for a cord. Has anyone even heard of the external modem that I have or help with my internal modem?

There is a project that will probably have information on getting your HCF modem to work under Linux: http://www.linmodems.org/

This project is attemtping to write code to make winmodems work under Linux. In terms of out-of-the=box support for this modem, you are correct, it won't work.

I have heard of the external modem you are using, but I haven't used it, nor could i find any specs online for you. Sorry.

Congrats on your move to Mandrake. I think you will be very happy with the ease of installation and use. Mandrake 8.0 should may recognize your winmodem if you are lucky. I have a Lucent Winmodem in my laptop that was configured correctly in the install. If you attach your external modem you should be able to point ppp at the correct port ex. ttys0 or s1,s2,s3 give each one a try. There is good forum support on the at mandrake.com try there if you have troubles. Good luck

I have just ordered a PCTel HSP PCI 56k data fax voice internal modem. Does anyone know if this works with Linux? The seller stated that it is compatible with Linux.

Firstly, you need to recognise the fact, that most winmodem chipsets are unsupported under linux.
There are some exceptions, namely ambient (Intel HAM), Softlink Lucent (One of the better supported). I would suggest you visit www.linmodems.org and firstly identify the chipset you are using, and see if there is a driver for this. Also note, winmodem drivers are generally kernel dependant, and you will need to know which kernel revision you are using to work with modular drivers.
I hope this isof some help to you.
Cliff Thomson.
