By GINA_M1 ·
I CHANGED THE RESOLUTION SETTING ON MY COMPUTER, WENT TO THE ADAPTER AND FOUND ONE THAT MATCHED THE SETTING I WAS LOOKING FOR APPLIED IT ASKED TO RESART SO NEW SETTINGS COULD TAKE EFFECT, WHEN STARTING UP LOADS BUT WONT START WINDOWS F2 AND F12 ARE THE ONLY OPTIONS PROMPTED AND CANT LOAD THE SAFE MODE TO REVERSE CHANGES/ HOW CAN I GET IT TO START ON SAFE MODE SO I CAN TAKE IT BACK? THE RESOLUTION IS huge WHEN THE INTERNET POPS UP THE BAR TAKES UP THE WHOLE SCREEN THATS WHY I CHANGED IT BUT NOW CANT GET IT TO EVEN GO TO START UP WINDOWS JUST LOADS TO START N THEN A BLACK SCREEN COMES UP AND STAYS ON... SOME ONE TIP ME PLEASE.

Try VGA mode

by ugadata In reply to HELP!!!!

If all you did was change resolution.....
you should still be able to get the alternate startup options menu.
Press F8 immediately after the BIOS splash screen. You should see the alternate startup options. One of these is Safe Mode, another is VGA Mode. To some extent either safe mode or VGA mode should work to reset your video resolution.

F8

by Mhofu In reply to HELP!!!!

From What you're posting it looks like you have a Dell machine. After that dell splash press F8 and that should give you the options for you to start windows in safe Mode. If windows does not start up what error are you getting? Please turn off caps lock as well. thanks

What happens...

by Mhofu In reply to yes..

When you press F8 when the Dell logo splash screen is running? Try that if you haven't. Also what version of windows are you running? If nothing happens you can try and verify that the hard drive is recognised in BIOS. you can check that by pressing F2.
Thank you

i havent tried it im away from the computer that im fixing right now, i will do it later thank you, but you mentioned to check to see if the hard drive is being recognized in the BIOS and i remember when i was fixing it saying off, that might be the problem. but i was not able to change any settings on the setup menu/ any suggestions?

Try this..

by brush-head? In reply to yes..

Normally F2 takes you to the BIOS to make changes there. From what you've said thus far you've only changed your graphics adapter settings in Windows. F12 takes you to a boot menu to select differing Operating Systems so I think that can be discounted.
F8 has to be pressed just after the initial boot screens which are output by the BIOS. So as soon as the screen that shows F2 & F12 disappear keep pressing F8.
F8 is what Windows recognises to allow opetions like Safe Mode, VGA etc & as other contributors have said will allow you to set the settings that will get Windows working again.
Come back if you can't fix it.
