What's the Operating system? What is the process that is running?
Sometimes this can be done by booting into Safe Mode.
Hold down F8 while starting the machine.

What OS are you using?

Generally you can press Ctrl-Alt-Del simultaneously once and it will bring up a screen that has task manager on it. You can hightlight any running or not-responding process and click on End Task.

If the process is running in the taskbar... then right-click on it and see if it has an exit progam or other stopping process.

If these processes are running at startup but not in the taskbar, then you have the option of removing them from your startup folder or removing them entirely ( go to Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the program(s) you do not want running anymore).

If you are in need of something more specific, you need to give us a bit more detail... OS? What prcoesses are you trying to terminate? etc.

TaskInfo2002 is a utility that combines features of Task Manager and System Information. It visually monitors different types of system information in Windows 9x/ME/NT/2k/XP and allows copying of such information to clipboard or a text file. It alsoallows you to run/stop
processes and force shutdown/restart of system. You can download a trial from
http://www.iarsn.com/downloads
I think everyone should have a copy - if only to be surprised at the background activity!

Another good program I find to end tasks is "Terminate Applications for Gaming" (TAG). This program can be downloaded at the following site: http://www.wmsoftware.com/tag/

As stated above, it depends on the os. If you're running win98 you can get atm. This is a free utility that works like the native task manager in w2k. It will show you what process are running and allows you to terminate them. Be careful, terminating running processes can lead to system instability. It would be better to not load the process on startup. For win98 use msconfig utility that comes with windows and change the process to not startup with windows.

ATM can be found at:
