Help with Linux battery life on a laptop

By shardeth-15902278 ·
I am taking a serious stab at dual booting Linux on my laptop. While there are a few gotchas to deal with. The biggie is battery life. I get about 4-5 hours out of XP, with moderate use. I get about 2 hours out of Ubuntu.

I would appreciate tips and/or references that might help me narrow this gap. Hopefully this will turn out to be a very thumby question.

If so, the near-constant optical drive activity will drain a battery's resources quicker than just hard drive activity.

But it is a default install, I haven't fiddled with it much yet (other than a failed attempt to the the Dell rendition of the Broadcomm Wireless adapter to work).

Even I have noticed that across the broad spectrum of Linux builds, some are far more processor intensive than others.

Depending on the CPU hardware of your laptop, some builds of Linux may prove more favourable to your battery than others.

I'm not sure what Power Saving Options are available in Ubuntu

by OH Smeg In reply to Help with Linux battery l ...

But that is where you need to look as the Base Install of Ubuntu is for a Desktop so there are no power Saving options activated.

If you are getting 2 hours out of the battery that is what the Battery can provide under full use so you need to look at saving power by shutting down things when they are not being used the Biggie would be the Optical Drive as these chew power like there is no tomorrow.
