Home Network Problem

By sean.madge ·
Trying to solve a problem on a friends PC where she said she could not connect to the internet (DSL)
I added her PC to my home network, added a working NIC and cabling. The PC is unable to reach the gateway, but is able ping loopback and other pcs on the network if i assign it a static IP within the same subnet. The router does have enough addresses available in its scope for this pc.

All of my networked PCs connect to a router which is connected to the DSL modem. All other PCs have no problems connecting.

The ISPs diagnosis is a virus, but updated virus scan and malware/spyware scans show nothing.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

If this is the first time that your friend attempted connecting to a DSL Internet connection. If she got a Self Install Kit from her ISP did she use the CD that comes with the Kit in an attempt to install the Modem and DSL Connection?

If so she's most likely hosed the entire OS so backup her data and reload the system after wiping the HDD to prevent anything remaining on the HDD that could adversely affect the new Installed OS and software. If you don't have a wiping utility you can use Boot & Nuke available here

Then Setup the DSL Connection manually by entering the Modems HTTP address in a Web Browser and then the Default User Name & Password and setup the Modem as required.

good point

but that is not the case here. I have been trying to figure out what she did prior to this problem, but as we know getting information like that isnt always the easiest. To be honest i believe a complete re-install is in order. I have reset tcp/ip with the netsh with zero effect. I'll do a backup of all her data and clear this sucker once i get the go ahead.

thanks for the info.

You could always try the good old CMD line

ipconfig /release and see if that helps then run the Network Setup Wizard again. It just might free up the Ethernet Connection.

Is your network being secure by wep or wpa? Need to enter the secure key correctly, the network is connect and data only send out but no receive.
