HotSync Cell Phone with Palm?

By anejako ·
Dear All:

A user I support has a Palm IIIc and a brand new Nokia 7160 cell phone. He would like the cell phone to act as a modem for the Palm, so that he can dial into the network, and HotSync with his laptop (plugged into the network back at the office).
Does he need a Palm modem to make this work, or can he just connect the cell phone and the Palm unit together?
This question may sound stupid, but Palms are funny in a lot of ways....

Palm handhelds equipped with OS 3.3 (or a later version) can perform IR HotSync operations with any cellular phone that has a built-in infrared modem that is IrDA compliant. You may then use the modem of the phone to dial up your ISP.

To connectto an ISP, you must install a third-party application (such as Data4.me or Proxyweb) on your handheld.

There is a way to physically connect a Palm to a cell phone, but you need a special cable to do so. I don't know off the top of my head where to get such a cable.

This was the best answer. The user did not tell me that data services had not been turned on for his phone yet.

The Palm with the modem do not require a cell phone to connect. The Palm can sync with the cell phone via the IR port. Check with the mobile operator if data service is enable for the user.
