hotsync problems

By djb5030 ·
I cannot hotsync either thru serial or IR...I get message "The connection between your handheld computer and the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again."

I have tried everything--checked settings and Com ports, hard resets (which worked initially), other computers, new software, serial port on computer evaluated etc. Even palm support doesn't know why I can't hotsync and they can't/won't help me. I am at my wits end and have 2 mos worth of data I need to sync. Please help.

I bet we could pin this down but i'll need more info from you and it will be tedious. if you are up for it, here are some starting questions:
what is your operating system? Mac? Pc? what version?
everything used to work fine then one day you couldn't sync? nothing changed that you know of?
what have you tried with Palm (so i don't waste more time telling you the same stuff).
did Palm suggest updating software in the Palm and/or desktop. Did you do that?
What is *your* guess/gut about whatis wrong?
In situations like yours given the data as i understand it, i would sniff around to see if the hardware on the Palm or cradle has failed.
did you test the cradle using HyperTerminal to see if it is trying to send data to your computer?
here are the steps to do that:
-----------------------------------------------
Windows 95/98
Run Hypertrm.exe.
Name your session, and then click OK.
When the Phone Number screen appears, select "Direct to (COM 2; or whatever COM Port used foryour cradle)" under Connect Using, and then click OK.
At the Port Settings screen, select the following settings:
* For Bits per second select: 9600
* For Data Bits select: 8
* For Parity select: None
* For Stop Bits select: 1
* For Flow Control select: None
* Click OK

Press the HotSync button on your cradle. A character stream flows across the screen, verifying that your organizer and cradle are functioning properly. If this character stream does not appear, then the cradle issuspect and should be replaced. Contact Palm? Support for assistance.
-----------------------------------------------
good luck!

Thanks for your answer. I tried the Hypertrm and it told me that it could not open the com port. I tried all my available ports (and adjusted the hotsync accordingly). Does this mean it's my computer or the cradle?
In answer to your questions:
I am running Windows 98 on an IBM Thinkpad.
The OS on my palm is 4.1 and desktop 4.1 (although I was running older versions when this first happened)

I used this computer and palm for at least 10 months to hotsync b/4 I had problems. Nothing changed that I knew of.

After it stopped hotsyncing, I tried the following
*Hard reset (which worked initially)
*backed up data and uninstalled the connectionmgr
*installed all new palm os (one hard reset cleaned out my data) and palm desktop (desktop is blank right now)
*cleaned connection (gold things) on cradle/palm w/ eraser (per manual)
*wiped entire hardrive on computer clean and installed new version of XP (when I did this I could not open the com ports and thus sent computer to IBM)
*tested palm on two diff computers and it worked, so sent computer to IBM identifying serial port problem. they just replaced hard drive and system board.

I do not know why the com ports will not open. I initially thought it was a serial port problem, but until your answer, I thought it might be the palm itself. But, now I again think it's the serial port or maybe the connection with the cradle. Palm said they'd never heard of this problem.

This might just be putting a splint on the true problem.

But at this juncture as I see it, the main thing is to get your connectivity restored on way or another. It sounds likthere still is a config problem with the comports. That can be workedthrough.

One other option if you have USB ports on your Laptop is to get a USB to Serial adapter and connect to the Palm that way. You'll also pickup a little increase in speed that way by going through the USB system instead of the Com ports.
Let me know if you have more questions about this.

The support people at palm almost admit to a known problem with EMD frying the sync chip in their pda's. They will replace your cradle with an upgraded one for free. However, if this chip has already been fried, this is no help to you.

I just returned my boss's pda for a free replacement, but it was still under warranty.

It is not an issue with your pc configuration, but the chip in the pda itself.
