How can I get my second SATA DVD burner to work?

I installed two SATA DVD burners (Lite-on iHAS 22406)in my HP d530 CMT. Only one of them will work at a time. The CD ROM drive that I took out was IDE. Both SATA terminals were unoccupied. Windows XP gives me a code 42 error in the device manager. “Duplicate device” is already running, cant activate the driver. “My Computer” indicates no D drive device is presentat all.If you unplug one of the burners the other will work fine. What is the solution to this problem? I’ve tried the Microsoft fixit utility – it says that it cannot help.

As this is some form of Windows open the Device Management and delete the DVD Drives both of them.

Then shut down the computer and unplug one of the drives. Restart the system and allow Windows to find the new hardware and install the driver.

Then power down and plug in the second DVD Drive. Restart the computer and allow Windows to find the new hardware.

If that doesn’t work you’ll need to enter the BIOS and make sure that the SATA Drives are not set to something silly like RAID 1 or something like that. Also check to see of both of the DVD Drives are correctly identified by the BIOS if they are not the most likely issue is that the SATA Controller doesn’t support 2 Devices at the same time unless there is a RAID Array setup.

One Set of Drivers

Are you suggesting that I should uninstall all the device drivers in the device manager for the cd rom drive? When I try to update the drivers it says that these existing drivers are the best drivers for the device. So I am somewhat reluctant to uninstall them.
When both sata dvd burners are connected, two identical devices appear in the bios. Under “storage options”. For “sata configuration” it says, “add as separate controller”. Everything else says “enable” next to it. I’m inclined to think that the sata controller may not support two devices at the same time, as you say.

In Device Manager. As they have already been installed when you use the uninstall Option in Device Manager it just removes the individual drive not the actual drivers.

That way when you connect one at a time and restart Windows if the SATA Controller supports 2 different devices the necessary drivers for your hardware will get installed. If you added both at the same time when the Auto Install Feature of Windows ran it most likely got Confused because there where 2 of the same thing involved and made a mistake.

The way around this if the option to have 2 devices is supported is to add one at a time. As the correct drivers are already present there will be no End User Intervention Required other than to start the system and wait till Windows Auto Installs the necessary items. 😉

I didn’t see this message in time earlier today. I opted for a different strategy. I sent one of the drives back to tigerdirect.com and I bought another similar burner in IDE. This way if the SATA controller doesn’t support two drives, especially identical ones, one will be slightly different and on a different channel. I plugged my CD ROM drive back into the IDE channel it came out of, and the system recognized it immediately, as well as the one new SATA DVD burner. I wish I tried your suggestion first, though. Frustration got the better of me I guess. Thanks for your help. I did learn a lot about my computer through all this.
