How can I switch IP addresses?

By EtherealRaven ·
OK, this is how it is. I have a Win2k laptop, and I take it with me to work, but I also wish to use the cable I have at home. I have DSL at work, and I recently got cable at home. I have IP addresses, gateways, DNS servers, etc., for my DSL at work. I was told that there is 3rd-party software that automatically enters in the IP addresses I need when I am at work, and changes them when I want to switch to my cable at home. Does anyone know of such software? If I can't find a solution soon,I may have to cancel my cable, because I need to use it at home. Please help!

Right click "My computer" on your desktop and select Properties. Click on Hardware and then "Hardware Profiles" and then select "Copy". Rename the current profile to whatever state the laptop is in then, e.g. Docked, Undocked. It's
a little easier to start out undocked. Rename the other profile Docked or
Undocked depending on your situation.

Then shut down the unit and restart it after docking. When you boot you'll
be asked for which profile you want, Docked or Undocked. The First profile
listed will be the default one and the unit will automatically boot into
that configuration after a set amount of time. Make sure all of your drivers
are loaded and that all of the startup programs you want have been added.

Thanks but it did not work. It didn't save the IP addresses when I switched the hardware profiles. I went to Profile A, where I have all of my DSL IP addresses. I restarted. I selected Profile B. I selected "obtain IP automatically." I restarted. I selected Profile B. It was correct, the option had "obtain automatically." I restarted. I selected Profile A. It said the same exact thing. It did not save the IP addresses with the profile. So now I lost the gateway numbers for my DSL.

This should be what you are looking for. Best of all, it's built in to the OS and it's free...

Switching Between Multiple W2K Network Configurations

If you are for example using a Notebook in various different Networks (e.g. at different Customer Sites), You always have to change Network Settings like IP / Wins / DNS Configuration /DHCP. The "netsh" Utility gives you the possibility to "dump" all settings into a file, that you can later use to restore your complete Network settings. To Save the current Settings:
netsh -c interface dump >networksetting.txt

You can then create a dump file for every Network that you use.

To Load the Settings again:
netsh -f networksetting.txt

In this way you can easily switch between different Configuration Sets.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi

You don't need any third party software to resolve your problem. What you have to do is to create a new hardware profile. For creating a new hardware profile - Right Click my computer, click hardware and goto hardware profiles. Select the current profile, click on copy and give the appropriate profile name. Now restart the computer it will ask for which profile to use, select the profile which you have just made. Once windows get started do the appropriate settings. Now you got two profiles one with settings for office network and other with settings for home.

Hope this will solve your problem
