How do I format Windows ME?

By jrayy ·
I had windows 98 SE on my computer but couldnt print cuz it apparently wasnt loaded right. So I installed Windows ME. Now it can't find the modem, the speakers wont work, and it doesnt recongize my monitor over 16 bits of color. It really messed up my computer. I was going to restart it in DOS mode and completely format it,but it doesnt give me that choice. Now I don't know how to get rid of the stupid Win ME. I'm going to get another Win 98 SE cuz thats only one I trust now. Could anyone answer this question. I'm out of ideas.

1. If you have critical data on the hard disk, better create a backup or copy to another hard disk first.

2. Create WinME bootdisk/startup disk.

3. Boot up the computer using the bootdisk and choosethe option to start computer with CD-ROM support.

4. Type 'format c:' without the quote when you are in the A drive prompt.

It is always best to do a clean install of Windows ME instead of upgrading to avoid briging over the system's error in Win98 into ME.

First let me say that I too am not a fan of ME. Too many problems. On the other hand the problems you are describing with your ME installation all sound "fixable".

Basically, you need to get hold of the ME drivers for all of the parts of your computer. I'll guess that the first step for you is the modem, so that you can connect to the Internet. Ask a friend for help downloading this onto a disk. Once you can connect to the Internet, Windows Update should take care of most of the rest of your issues.

On the other hand, if you're dead set to go back to Win98SE, then you need a good boot floppy. I keep a couple around, for each of my PCs. They boot into DOS, and provide CD support. They have a couple of tools: format, fdisk, edit, and so on. So when (not IF, all of my PCs have some veriosn of Windoze <g>) I need to, I can boot off of the floppy, bring up FDISK and start over from the beginning.

One other comment: I am surprised that ME did not pick up your video controller, sound card and so on, during the install. It is usually "pretty good" at doing that.

If you upgraded to ME then you should be able to uninstall it from the add/remove applet in control panel. Probably easier to resolve the print problem in Se...

ME is still a "plug-n-pray" operating system.
Go to your "Device Manager" and look for any conflicks. Install drivers manually from there if need be. The monitor problem is also a driver issue.
I also agree, never upgrade always be sure and do a clean install.
Good luck
