How do I get rid of the My Pictures fold

By mprovenzano ·
I have a slightly annoying problem. I administer a Win2k school district, I have noticed that a my pictures folder appears in all of my user's home folders. Is there any way to massage the gpo's to avoid the creation of this folder or to lock the use of the folder? (the kids use it to hide games and inappropriate items)

Instead of giving them a home folder, you can use redirected folders in group policy to redirect the users My Documents folder. I'm not at work now to check, but I'm pretty sure you can deny the My pictures folder from being redirected.
I suggest that you set up a partition with quotas (before you configure redirected folders), you can control the amount of Data your students can save. Make sure you don't give the students exclusive permissions to their folder. It will be easiar to manage when you have to delete a students folder structure.

Hi

start->regedit (regedit32)- locate it if it is not there, then create it. It should be a "DWORD" value, then change or set the value to "1" ==> "0x00000001 (1)".
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Explorer\NoSMMyPictures]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Explorer\\NoSMMyPictures]

Good luck

Mohamed

Backup your registry first.
Editing and modifying the registry could result into a serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system.

Remember to be extremely careful when you edit the Registry, because Registry errors can render a system unbootable. Be sure to have a current Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) before you make any of the modifications.

I realize what you are saying, but by using folder redirection in group policy to redirect ONLY the My Documents folder, you can have the students data redirected to a fresh partition with quotas set up, and you would be able to control the My Pictures folder. With Disk quotas set up it should not even really matter if they have a my pictures folder, since the quotas would allow them to store only the MB's you allow them regardless of where they put it within their my documents folder. You could use disk quotas with your existing setup, however if the user has a folder on the partition before you set up quotas on it, you won't be able to restrict them from exceeding their quota. By switching to redirected folders from a home folder you canseemlesly switch them to a new partition. One that you have pre-configured with disk quotas.
