how do i merge a partition on my server with another partition.

    Locked

    by hadraystuurman ·

i am using SBS2003 – NTFS partitions, configured as basic disks.
    c: – 16GB
    e: – 100GB
    f: – 700GB
    unpartioned – 150GB

    physically – 3 500GB drives configured as RAID 5.

drive c is running critically low – below 1GB. i would like to merge drive c with the unpartitioned space, but none of the apps i have tried allows me to do it.

also, i cannot convert it to dynamic disks.

    what to do?

    thankx in advance

You cannot extend the system partition using Windows utilities. Being this sounds like a production server I suggest you make sure you have a rock solid backup, then use product that will allow you to modify partitions (Acronis makes a good product).

I would first look at where your space is used though, because you should only have OS files on C:. Maybe you could uninstall a large program and reinstall it to another drive. Also make sure your pagefile is on another partition.

Excellent, excellent advice. It may be SOP for servers, and should be SOP for any ‘puter. Even those used by the ‘computer-as-toaster’ crowd of users. It is oft stated that ‘pagefile on the same physical drive is not faster’. Irrelevant. If it is not in a partition, it cannot contribute to the fragmentation of that partition.

IMO, the rubb… er, recycle bin should be in _its_ own partition for the same reason.

I also prefer a separate partition for ‘Applications & Utilities’ so that the ‘System’ part is not crowded. The fewer files that the system has to search thru, the faster it can run. This even applies to the utilities that are included by the OS install.

It should be apparent that a ‘Data’ partition is not just desirable, but virtually mandatory.

Once the System and the ‘Apps’ partitions are optimized, they should seldom need defragging. The Data part. will need it on the usual schedule, and it (defrag) will go _much_ faster.

It is probably too much to expect from MS installs,… one can hope that the mfrs will implement it for OEM installs.

      Use Acronis 10.0
You can boot from it and change the size of the drive pretty easily

      Use partition magic 8.0

Use this software to boot the system and then you can use this software to resize any partition in GUI mode. But you should take backup before proceeding for security of your critical data.
