How do I set up VPN?

By esardon02 ·
I have a small LAN in my home using one server and two workstations. I'm running windows 2000 advanced server(on the server side) with Win XP Pro and Win 2000 Pro on the workstations. I connect to the internet through a D-Link DI-704P residential gateway(router) which is connected to a cable modem. So far so good - my little network is up and running, but I don't know anything about VPN. Can anyone helpme set this up? Thanks in advance.

How do I set up VPN?

well, to really take advantage and understand how vpn works, you'll need a machine that's not connected to your network. If you can take one of your machines and use a dial up connection to connect to the internet, then you'll be able to setup VPN.

The way VPN works is that an 'outside' machine uses the internet to 'tunnel' into a private network. You can understand now why you can't really setup a true VPN with all machines being in the network.

here's a link on how to setup VPN in windows 2000:

remove any spaces into the pasted URL.

Once you setup your server to accept incoming connections, then you can just create a regular connection on the client. Feel free to message me if you have any other questions.

To add to Quintar's answer, your W2K server needs RRAS enabled and configured for VPN. Open admin tools from the control panel. Click on Routing and remote access. Right click on you server and the RRAS wizard will start. Just use the wizard to setup RRAS on your server.

I have a question for you, Who will be accessing your network from a remote location? VPN [and dialup] is for users to access a network from a remote location [such as sales employees for a company that has to access their database on the corporate network.
