how do i speed up printing in NT/98 envi

By alloy1 ·
i've just been assigned to a rather small NT4.0 SP5 network (12 users) running DHCP. when the users print to an HP5 printer that is setup through a HP jetdirect 500X and shared from the server, it can take up to 20 minutes for the one page job to print! i can see it sitting in the queue but it just won't start printing!! how can i make the server begin the process quicker? like as soon as it arives in the queue? spooling is setup.

I would use LPR printing instead of HP port. The printers will need static IP addresses, but it is very quick.

You don't say if the server is printing to the JetDirect card using LPD(TCP/IP) or DLC. Also, have you been receiving any type of notifications in your event log on the server regarding printing?

My first guess would be that you are using LPD toprint to your JetDirect cards and that you are experiencing time-outs when your server attempts to connect to the JetDirect card (the event logs should confirm this.) One recommendation I would make is to use DLC to print to the JetDirect cards andconfigure the DLC port to establish a continuous connection the printer.

However, more information might lead me down a different path.

I use to think that HP Jetdirect was better then candy, until I had your problem. I eliminated my problem by uninstalling Jetdirect and using TCP/IP printing.

Setup a test printer and try it, Install a LPR port on server then assigned it an IP address, give it a name and then shared it and set the access permissions.

Since you are running DHCP, don't forget to exclude the IP, so that it will not try to assign it something else.

You will have to install a new monitor to get the LPR port, and you will be given an opportunity to install drivers for other OS's (95/Nt etc.) during the share phase.

1. Take a look into your clients printer driver, the PCL and PostScript driver make a difference, also the setting of resolution.

2. Adjust the setting in Scheduling tab at printer Properties.

3. .... your network is too busy?

If you have only one printer, spooling is not needed.

Hope this help :)
