In reply to How do I stop a rogue update?
> open windows update settings
select
> Download updates but let me choose whether to install them
Then when the updates are downloaded install one at a time until finished
start each monthly update cycle by installing the MRT (Malicious Software Removal Tool) update first
also to easily remove the “Install Updates and Shutdown” from the shutdown menu,
you need to have one of the following versions installed
> XP -Pro
> Vista business
> Vista enterprise
> Vista Ultimate
> Win 7 pro
> Win 7 enterprise
> Win 7 Ultimate
if you have one of the above versions
you enter the group policy editor
Start > Run > gpedit.msc
expand the following policy tree in the navigation pane on the left
> Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update
and change the following policy entries :
: Do not adjust default option to ‘Install Updates and Shut Down’ in Shut Down Windows dialog box
: Do not display ‘Install Updates and Shut Down’ option in Shut Down Windows dialog box
the above policies with the same names are also in User Configuration
expand the User Configuration policy tree to:
> User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update
: Do not adjust default option to ‘Install Updates and Shut Down’ in Shut Down Windows dialog box
: Do not display ‘Install Updates and Shut Down’ option in Shut Down Windows dialog box
set the above policies in both Computer Configuration and User Configuration to ”Enabled”
if you are stuck with one of the home versions
> XP Home
> Vista Home Basic
> Vista Home Premium
> Win 7 Starter
> Win 7 Home Basic
> Win 7 Home Premium
you will need to use registry files to change the group policy options as there is no group policy editor in any of the home versions
I have already created these registry files and can post them if required
