How do I take It inventory from my desk

By rapell ·
I recently joined a bank and was posted to a branch with just over 30 computers. Three months down the road, we are going to be renewing the computers at the branch and that means renaming them (bank policy doesn?t use DHCP), setting IP addresses, etc...I have heard that there are admin scripts that can take stock of assets in a network, and since my inventory hadn?t changed from the one I inherited from my predecessor, I have been changing the dates on the end of month report and submitting, but now they will need me to actually walk around!! This is not easy, especially that PC documentation is kept at the head office and so I have to boot every machine and get its specifics? Oh no!

Large scale, small scale

In larger oranization, you can use Microsoft's SMS tools(and third party add ins) to gather this kind of data. But it is a pretty expensive solution for 30 PCs.

There are also audit tools which can run on an individual computer and create a text file.

I would recommend getting one of those tools(just google PC audit) and mailing out a reminder to all 30 people to run the tool and send you the file. You could create an access database or excel spreadsheet to import the text files.

For those who don't run the script by the deadline you might have to walk around and run it for them.

Trackit

You can also check into a software that we use called Track It, works great, we have over 800 user machines and this software give us all the hardware, software, network, and user info for each machine, printers included that we need. Not sure money wise though. You'll also have to do a one time install of the client on each workstation but this can be accomplished via login scripts.

Free Tools Are Available!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Debon In reply to Trackit

Am sure you can find free tools at www.cnet.com just check their downloads section. Am not sure what type of info or how much you need but this should not be too big of a problem and as someone suggested you can run this as a login script which can be set up at the domain server. CHEERS!!!

N.E.W.T

I have tried SMS and Track it both require a client installed on each PC. NEWT does not and it takes a great inventory inculding both hardware and software, startup, video, monitor, printers that are attached. it is a great piece of software that will run on a regular PC. The service and support is great and the new BETA will be a stunner. The big plus the size of the program is less then 10 meg, and it exports quickly to Access or Excel. the cost is what brought me over for sure...200 for the first 100 ip or machines and 100 for each 100 machines. I give it two thumbs up!
