How do you disable the PWL??

By potter ·
How do you permanently get rid of the password list file and how do you disable password caching?? Is there a registry edit? I already deleted the pwl, but it returns after you reboot. I deselected it in msconfig and deleted it in sysedit in the system.ini file. Help??

How do you disable the PWL??

Found this here:

May work in Win 98 too.

By default Win95 keeps a record of passwords for everyone who logs into
windows. It does this by creating a .pwl file in the windows directory. This
file is encrypted, but it has been reported that it is very easy to decrypt.

To turn off this "feature" of Win95 you need to run the policy editor for
Win95. This is called poledit.exe and can be found on the Win95 CD. It is
not installed by default. It is located in \admin\apptools\poledit on the CD.
You can either run it straight off of the CD or you can copy the files to your
hard drive.

Once you start poledit, you need to "Open Registry" under the File menu. You
will then see a "Local Computer" icon; double click this. Then go to Network
/ Passwords and check the box next to "Disable password caching". Once you
restart windows, it will no longer make those silly .pwl files.

The easiest way is to get out the poledit disk, I forget exactly where, but if you open the registry with it and go into local system there are two options specifically for these two items. I don't think you can disable using pwl files, but you candisable user profiles, which should keep the PC the same for everyone to use (although it will be as the default user)

Once you delete the .pwl it will come up the next time you reboot so what you need to do is delete any password in the set password boxes if windows puts one in for you. You want the password boxes blank and then hit the OK button it will not come up again after that
