How I copy my old Harddrive to a new one

By Yamezbond ·
Ok, here is the deal, I have a Western digital 80MB hard drive with Win XP Pro, but I need to change to a new Hard Drive same brand only this edition came with the 8MB cache memory, I want to make a ghost cloning hard drive to hard drive, the thing is that I don't want to lose my programs installed on my old Hard Drive, My questions are:
How I can do this? is there any risk? Do I have to use sysprep before I cloning the Hard Drive?, now, after I cloning the hard drive I need to activate my winxp licence again?.

Please Help!

How I copy my old Harddrive to a new one

Is the drive formatted NTSF or FAT32?

If it is FAT 32, then you should be able to use Western Digitals Data Lifeguard Tools to copy the drive.

CAUTION: Choose manual options when running DLT, or it will install a drive overlay program.

In aquick look around WD's web site, I could not verify that DLT will copy a NTSF drive.

You could simply boot from the DLT floppy with both drives in the system, and see if the tools recognize your NTSF drive.

If so, it should be safe to copy theold drive onto the new drive.

As to activation, the HDD serial number is part of the 'core' hardware in XP.

If you have a NIC installed, and change nothing else, you should not trigger an activation event.

If you were to leave the old driveon the system as a slave, it's serial number should still be part of the system identification list.

Even if you do trigger an activation event, Microsoft has been fairly liberal at processing new codes.

Finally found it.
WD does say that Data Lifeguard Tools version 10 supports NTSF.

So, install one drive as master, the other as slave.

Boot from the DLT floppy.
Select the manual options
Copy the old drive onto the new drive.

Sure ... the Western Digital's Data Lifeguard v10.0. has a "drive to drive" copy utility:

Note to marmendaiz: Your 250 points should go to TheChas if this application meet your requirements.

I did this myself last week, but I used the Symantec Ghost for 2003 program. It did not trigger the license activation foolishness either. I put the new drive as the second drive on the same IDE cable (my Dell uses cable select, but if your PC uses master/slave, set the new drive as slave). Installed Ghost and ran as instructed. Ghost takes care of formatting and everything else. They have a drive-to-drive copy wizard. After the copy, disconnnect the old drive, set new drive as master or as first position and disconnect the old drive. Worked perfectly, and I was even dual booting with WinXP and WinME on the same drive. Did not do sysprep. Everything went well. Good luck.

What could be the problem? or waht i'm doing wrong?
