How many DNS servers does it take to...?

By alice_hunter ·
Does every Forest require at least 1 DC to be a DNS server or can connectivity and name resolution be accomplished in a large environment, 200 + servers and 4000 users, from a clustered pair of DNS servers outside the Forest?

I haven't been able to find any doco to the contary (though it is difficult to find answers to questions like this). I assume the "external" DNS servers are part of another forest (and therefore DDNS). To truly answer the question though requires a bit more information, like how distributed are the users/servers, what links are you using, etc. While you might be able to get name resolution, you might not get performance.

Thank you for attempting to answer the question. However your answer is not an answer. It just identifies my concerns and assumptions. Des anyone know of a working system like this?

I ask this question because I am getting preasure from the UNIX group to remove DNS from my Windows 2000 DC's. I am looking for a technical reason to keep DNS on my DC's. This a political issue. They feel they are losing control and much to their disappointment no problems have resulted in having DNS on my DC's in the 5 months they have been on the network.
Thanks again for your interest in helping me resolve this issue.

Your workstation/server naming convention might help!! If your DNS servers are private and you need to use non standard DNS naming characters then Wind 2000 DNS is the only server that can support this.
