How soon do you think A Desktop Mouse becomes an Antique?

By kalyan_revadi ·
In this Touch Screen/tablets World, people are slowly forgetting there is a Device called Mouse and it is used to point and click on a computer. I am wondering how long does it take to really make a Mouse an Antique !

My mouse becomes an antique when it gives up..

When my mouse dies, and only then, it becomes an antique. Touch screens are different but not as fast as a mouse on some things.

Not for a long time yet

by OH Smeg In reply to How soon do you think A ...

Sure Tablets are all the rage at the moment but they are hardly the replacement of the Desktop and will not be in the foreseeable future.

Till you can manipulate a CAD Image without a mouse on a Tablet Mice are going to be around for a very long time.

An antique is any item that is over 100 years old

by Spitfire_Sysop In reply to How soon do you think A ...

short: Not in your lifetime
long:
The first commercial mouse, release in Germany in 1970, will become an antique in 2070. The famous Apple mouse will become antiquated around 2086. I think people will still be using them at that time. Perhaps 3D mice and spatial pointing devices will be more prevalent then but I may not be around to see it.

Still Using Control Commands

by TheChas In reply to How soon do you think A ...

In addition to the mouse staying around for many more years, I continue to use the old control and alt commands that started in DOS.

I also don't see myself ever switching to a tablet or a smartphone. Or a touch-screen for that matter. So I personally expect to be using a mouse and keyboard for at least another 20 years.

Even top end work-station laptops do not offer enough storage capacity for my needs. And yes, I want my storage local and not in some "cloud" or even a local server. My desktop system has 4TB of storage plus USB drives for backup and 3 optical drives.

Antique Mouse !!

by subhomoy.chakraborty In reply to How soon do you think A ...

Well this one is pretty much relative to the user.

1. If you have lots of money : It may become antique as soon as a new better and more feature based mouse is intoduced.

2. If the mouse works but your board dosent support the same. Elementary incompatibility. You dont have a choice.

3. Technically a mouse only becomes antique, if the hardware technology / middleware stops supporting its interface. A mouse in working condition but not supported any more.

A non working mouse is a junk, not antique.

By "antique", I assume you must mean "obsolete".

by seanferd In reply to How soon do you think A ...

In which case, the mouse, like the Space Shuttle, was obsolete before it was put into production. (And this would be according to the inventor of the mouse himself.)

2 YEARS, Good Guess.

LEAP MOTION will be released on the public in 2013. Controling Computer Graphics in 3D instead of Mouse's 2D. Thus making the good old mouse antiquated.
