One way to do it is to download the newest version on Passware Software. Another way is to buy the Passware Software. I think you should be able to download it from some Torrent site or even using a Peer-to-Peer Sharing Program like Ares Galaxy.

    Dewasish,

What do you mean by break the administrator password? Are you interested in resetting the password because you forgot it? Or are you interested in finding out what it is? You can use Winternal Admin Pak which has the locksmith feature for you to reset the local administrator password on the particular machine.

if all it takes is to download simple software to reset a windows admin password, thats pretty pathetic, and it is because i have used this method before. you need to use linux if you really want your network safe.

I have reasons - the posts coming from Why Me Worry? were idiotic and racist. I for one will not let somebody away with such posts. I now laugh as WMW posts has to be edited by TR and since then WMW has not returned. I am just vindicating my reasons as others (who backed WMW) were on my back!

I will not PM back - you may be WMW (or a backer) for all I know and are after my e-mail address!

To keep a bad guy from breaking the administrator password, learn a tiny bit about the bad guy's plan and then frustrate it. The bad buy must get access to read, write or physically replace the legitimate administrator?s password hash.
To frustrate this, I suggest three areas of action.

    1) Tighten the permission needed to get the administrator's password hash. Never give away write access to this file. Make sure the programs we trust with this file are who they say they are and are healthy and bug free. Any copy of password hashes that is unprotected can be subject to password cracking tools where millions of combinations per second may be tried. In this case, a strong password is the only hope left. If the combinations that must be tried are large enough, this can frustrate a cracker into giving up. Take extra care not to use weak password hashing methods or easily guessed combinations, this mistake can crush a nice password in minutes rather than the millions of years it ought to have taken to crack. For those that want to know more, Wikopedia has a lengthy but solid section on strong passwords. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Password_strength

    2) Use strong hashing methods for the administrative password. Double check that backward compatible -- and often more vulnerable hashes --- are not computed for the administrator hash. This can be a tough step in some networks because older systems on the network may invoke backward compatibility modes. However, there is hope for high security passwords. There are Administrator passwords that by reason of length or complexity are not backward compatible. For Microsoft systems, either prove that no LM hashes are computed or create high security passwords greater than 14 places in length; in either case, LM hash backward compatibility will collapse.

    3) Prevent alternative boot programs from running. This is also a tough job because boot bios passwords are not often in use. Further, physical access to systems will allow the use of boot CDs, USB boot devices, or even replacement of bios chips to bypass bios passwords. Unprotected copies of sensitive files can also be made.

If we use quality password hashing methods, choose high security passwords, do not give away write access, limit alternative boot drives and use bios boot passwords, we can give a cracker such a head ache that he or she will go somewhere else. This is the kind of thing that earns us our paychecks.

go into the registry and disable lmcache passwords, provided you don`t have anything less than windows xp computers accessing that account or machine, it will make cracking software work harder (and slower) to crack that password, though if you really want to make password cracking a *****, secure your .sam file, make sure noone can copy it, maybe by restricting roaming access to the folder its in to just the admin account of that server/computer and set a password for the BIOS and configure the boot order to skip CD/FDD boot detection until you need it, this will stop the clever ones with copies of linux from forcing there way in and cracking it that way.

    hope it helped

I haven't worked with windows 200 in a while. I need to access my parent's computer and they don't seem to remember the password. Please tell me how to get it? Do I go into the BIOS? They may have joined a workgroup, so I don't know how to approach this. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

Save off your parents data and rebuild your parents Windows 2000 system completely. If neither you nor your parents know the admin password, odds are that there is a whole lot more wrong with this system than a lost password.

Get the boot CD product and its microsoft license. Use either Windows 2000 or XP. Because Vista generally requires hardware upgrades, you might be better off bying a new computer at that point.

    1) Save off your parents data
    2) Boot from the CD and rebuild this system.

If your parents approve, this activity will solve the situation and generally clean up this system as well.

you can turn your computer off and then enter the boot options while booting and enter it into safe mode, from there you can change the registry, not sure what key to put the logon screen as a command line, from there you can change passwords, you can look this up online for a more detailed explanation
