How to find duplicate item in one column

How to find duplicate items in one column?

In Excel 2000, we have one column with many item codes; now I hope to find out duplicate codes, changing its font color to red. How can I realize this, but not using "sort"?
I thought to use "match", like MATCH(A10,$A$1:$A$1000,0), but how to exclude the cell itself?

Of course, you would select the A column and the go to Format Conditional Format. Change the selection to "Formula" enter the equation and change the formatting options.
