How to fix a "stop:0x0000007b inaccessible boot device"

i have a dell optiplex GX260 with a windows 2000, Just yesterday i was transfering some data from my pc to a thumb drive when the Pc froze. Pressing the alt+ctrl didnt help so my sis had the pc shut down by holding down the start button for a few mins, i then start it up again but this time windows couldnt complete running, it would only load halfway and the stop:0x0000007b inaccessible bott device came up. i have tried starting in up on safe mode but the same blue screen comes up b4 windows could completely load. i have even tried downloading a boot check disk and booting up from there but it would just say "invaild disk"
i dont know what else to do, pls help.

First check the Bios see If the boot order is correct, make sure that all your IDE channels are enabled in your CMOS?s ?Chipset Features Setup.?
Then try to run the Recovery Console . See if this makes any difference.

Have you tried attempting to start the computer with another HDD in it and the install CD?It's possible that the HDD controller is faulty or the MRR's on your HDD are damaged and preventing it from being mounted and used as a valid Boot Device.
You could also try the problem HDD in another PC as a slave and see if you can read anything off it.

Please check the Hard Disk Drive for Bad sectors , as the virus might have caused bad sectors on the hard drive.

I do have come across similar experience.Try reloading RAM after reinserting Motherboard's buttery. Mutation in RAM Mammary is wiped out and clears way to smooth Booting! On many occasions of HANG UP and then Boot failure this has worked.

Virus

I have the same problem and it most likely that you have a boot disc virus.you may not beable to scan your pc as you can not get in to safe mode or to your desktop.
If any one has any ideas on how to fix this i would to hear them.

I am having the same issue with a Compaq Deskpro EN machine. At start up there is the inaccessible boot device error message displayed and I do have Win2000 OS installed. If you all have any other suggestions I would appreciate it. I will attempt to remove the hard drive and install it into another machine to read its data.

Booting from the Win 2000 CD and choosing the first R for Recovery Console. When this opens run Chkdsk /r If it returns with one or more errors recovered, continue to run it until no more errors. Should Chkdsk fail to fix the errors, try MHHD available from their web site or in the UBCD ISO.

Quick note for motherboard installers

I got the 0000007b error when I put in a new dual-core motherboard in my wife's old HP. It didn't specifically say boot device error, but the solution was the same.

Naturally, I had to temporarily connect the old motherboard so I could update the registry. In case MS decides to remove the page, here's the basic info:

Copy the following information into Notepad, and then save the file on a 3.5-inch disk. Name the file Mergeide.reg, without the .txt file name extension.

2. Extract the Atapi.sys, Intelide.sys, Pciide.sys, and Pciidex.sys files from the %SystemRoot%\Driver Cache\I386\Driver.cab file, or copy the files to the %SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers folder.

3. In Microsoft Windows Explorer, right-click the Mergeide.reg file in the floppy drive, and then click Merge.

Windows XP displays the following message:
Are you sure you want to add the information in A:\Mergeide.reg to the registry?
Click Yes.

After the import process is completed, Windows XP displays another message:
Information from A:\Mergeide.reg was successfully entered into the registry.

NOTE:

Being MS, they say to put it on a floppy. You should be able to use a thumbdrive with any fairly recent board. Or, just save it to your My Documents directory!

Reboot, and it should work.

same problem with asus laptop. switched from 'IDE->ACHI' to IDE compatibility and it worked perfectly. Thanks.

k so i downloaded a file that was a viris some tims 0x0000007b comes up and sometimes a different 1 that goes by realy fast safe mode doesnt work and neither does anything else like dbm ect so its on total lockdown in my ibm sys config tge memery doesnt show anything about shadowing or cache someone pls help me so i dont have to spend$ fixin it thx!
