How to land the CIO role?

By PENGUINSRULE ·
Greetings:
I'm a senior technical lead/project leader for a very large foreign company, and essentially I manage the production manufacturing systems, and I spend most of my time leading high level projects.
I have considered moving intothe CIO role. Unless something unforseen happens, our CIO will remain here, and due to the remote location I work in, it's unlikely that I'll have enough visibility for this to happen here.
Does anyone have an idea how best to move into the CIO role? I think I have a fairly good idea as to what the role entails. Obviously, I think that it is critical to be able to understand the business and show that IT adds value to the organization in a real clear manner. I think the primary questions for me is whether the role is a good fit for me personally, and how to go about going that direction if it is. From what I've seen things get nastier the higher you go, so it all depends on the quality of the people you will be working with andhow good of a fit there is.

Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks

How to land the CIO role?

I?m a little confused about part of your question. Are you saying that the CIO position is already filled, and there is little chance of the present CIO moving on? If this is the case, your best bet is to try waiting him out, unless he is grossly incompetent, and you can significantly substantiate that fact.

The ?environment? of the CIO position can vary greatly, depending on the size of the company, the type of business the company engages in, and even company culture. As you have suggested, the CIO position can be very ?political.? The ability to fill this role successfully may have more to do with your ability to ?schmooze? with the bigwigs, than your technical acumen.

In general, what makes a successful CIO?
Political astuteness (within the company);
Thorough understanding of the business processes of the company;
Thorough understanding of how IT can complement or improve those business processes (or not ? technology isn?t always the answer);
Up-to-date knowledge of current and future technology trends;
Ability to accurately forecast and execute a budget;
Management expertise (although you may or may not have a management role depending on your company?s culture and organization);
Technical expertise and experience (hands-on capabilities) usually fall to the bottom of the list because a CIO is more a thinker than a doer (usually);

How do you set yourself up to move into this role?
Make a name for yourself as an innovator.
Always try to exceed all goals set for you.
Seek more responsibility.
Talk with the present CIO; Be honest; Tell him you are interested in moving to a CIO position (although not necessarily his) someday; Maybe see if he would be interested in a mentorship program with you; He may have a lot of influence as to who succeeds him should he decide to retire or otherwise move on;

Is the CIO role a good fit for you? Obviously, only you can answer that.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.
