How to LOCK DOWN Windows 95?

    Locked

    by a521921 ·

I need to lock down some Win 95 machines that are going to be sitting in an autoshop running tracking and time keeping software. The software only needs three files and an icon on the desktop to run, but it connects to the server via TCP/IP.

Question is this: I need to LOCK DOWN these machines to make sure that nobody can get into them and screw them up. I’m talking complete lock down, where all they can do is reboot the machine and double-click the icon for our software. I have to have F5, F8, and safe-boot functionality removed, run, network nbhd, my computer, and access to any hard drive COMPLETELY locked out. And of course the registry. Idealy, we would have a login that gives security based on the id so as admins we could change settings, but the regular user is locked out.

I’ve had some success with Poleedit (when it works) and various software, but nothing does what I need completely. I’m willing to use a variety of tools to do this.

Has anyone out there done this, and what would

You are on the right track, I would create a policy that locked everything down and store the policy on the server so each PC uses that policy and is restricted at login. As for keystrokes, you will want to write, or have someone write VB scripts that run at bootup to disable key combinations.

Security Setup is a security add-on to Windows 95. It makes the security options under Windows available to everyone. Now you can disallow people from changing your Windows configuration, lock your desktop icons, lock network settings, disable shutdown, disable DOS applications, and secure hardware settings.
best of all it is a freeware utility .

You can put the entry BootKeys=1 to your msdos.sys file to prevent users from booting in safe mode, msdos mode, etc.

There is a decent article on policies and profiles and how to implement them here:

Powertoys(Available on the Net) will disable the Key functionality at Bootup. Also what type of network are you running? If you are using Novell get hold of ZEN works as this lets you bolt everything right down.

I have two customers where I have almost identical problems. We purchased a copy of “Fortress”, it is a security program and is not expensive, but you can lock down tight. Only the best hacker will be able to break in.

I’ve had players and the answer is not just one option, While Tweak gets to registry options (remove drive letters, autoboot entries and such) and Zen applies IF you login (try securing a user that does not login and has Poledit on diskette). WhatI ended up doing on one system was… removing explorer!
In the System.INI files, I made shell=netscape (with full path). That allowed them to use our Intranet, and nothing else.

If your tcp connection can be setup on a command line … tryit!

With policy editor you can use the allow only specified application to run and creat a custom desktop and remove eveything from the start menu. you will also have to edit the registry to take the help command out of the start menu. as for safe mode youare out of luck as this is done before bootup. it would be preferable to use a windows NT workstation this is much easier at that piont.

There is this shareware software for windows 95 and 98 called PowerSetting. It not only gives your the option of locking ur system but also gives ur customization options so that you can make your computer run faster.
You should be getting this software free to download from either CNEt or winmag.com.

Another solution which kind-of goes along with these other recommendations is a diskless workstation. A special boot card is inserted into the PC which performs the boot directly from the network server. A virtual disk in RAM or a user accessable directory on the server may be used for temporary files. If enough RAM is available the Virtual Memory options may be turned off so no swap file is created. All files except for the application data files would be secured as read-only on the server. All options would be pre-set by the administrator and would be retained and secure between sessions. By removing poledit.exe, regedit.exe and other update programs from the Windows directory and using the other suggestions given in other replies for various settings, the environment integrity may be maintained.

I dislike the “Diskless Workstation” under most conditions but this is definitely a situation where I would recommend it.
