How to Log On Windows XP as THE Administrator (Password not recognized)

By tae.chang ·
I have a desktop and a laptop.

On my laptop, I am able to hit ctrl+alt+del twice at the welcome screen and log in as the administrator. The password was the same as the main user.

On my desktop, I am also able to hit ctrl+alt+del twice at the welcome screen and I get the pop up box where I can type in Administrator but the computer does not recognize any of my passwords. I used both of the passwords from the user accounts.

My questions are:
1. How do I create the proper password for my administrator log in or how do I find out what the password currently is? This is a brand new computer so maybe there is a default?
2. If I have to start up the computer in "safe mode" to log in as administrator how do I do that?
3. Does anybody know how/why Windows XP limits the user accounts even though they state that they have administrative rights? Never knew about THE administrator until I tried to upgrade iTunes and was not able to.

Thank you.

Try a blank password.
To enter "safe mode" press F8 on startup right after the BIOS/POST screen.

If that does not work the following applies....

Safe Mode Process

After I enter the safe mode, how do I proceed to log on as the administrator?

As for the security measure, I totally understand.

Okay...

When you go in to safe mode, it should come up with a login box. Use Administrator for the user name, then type in the password. Post back if you need more help.

Thanks for the reply on how to log on in safe mode. My problem is I have a brand new computer, I set up 2 user accounts, yet when I try log on as the administrator it does not recognize the password of either user.

Try this........

On a new set up, usually, you have to go through "first boot" at which time you are asked the administrator password which MAY be different than the user accounts that you set up. If it did not ask that question, try leaving the password blank and click OK.

IF you get logged in as THE Administrator, be sure to go set a password for the account that YOU can remember.

Also remember

that if using XP Home, you can not logon as administrator Unless in Safe Mode.
You may create an additional account with Admin rights and logon with that.
User accounts do not change the admin password.

XP Home

I have Windows XP Home and am able to get the log in prompt when I hit ctrl+alt+del twice at the welcome screen. I tried log in on with a blank and it did not work.

sounds like I am screwed. Weird because it's a brand new computer and all I did was create 2 user accounts, nothing else.

You can get the prompt

but you CAN NOT logon in normal mode with the Admin account.
This is by design. Only Safe Mode
XP Pro you can.

These guys are right

It is not normal for a computer manufacturer to set an administrator password, therefore if there has been a password set on this machine then you or whoever initially set the computer up from first boot must have set the password.
If you have tried to log in as administrator without putting a password in and you cannot log in there is nothing else we can help you with here
