how to migrate apps from win98se to winx

By wagmaster ·
I put my win98se pc primary HD into my new winxp pc as a slave. I need a way for winxp to recognize the apps from the old HD. Is there any software or a feature in winxp to do this?

You can try the files and settings transfer wizzard (under programs/accessories/system tools). But, for most of the applications, you will need to re-install them.

The reason for this is that the applications will not be registered in the XP registry. Nor, will the required DLL and other system files be installed in the XP windows folders.

Also, some applications will require patches to work in XP.

For some applications, all you will need to do is create a shortcut to the program file.

Hi,

I agree with TheChas on the need to re-install for some programs - particularly the ones that changed the registry or added DLLs to the system directories when installed.

As he said, you can create shortcuts to many programs and they'll simply run. I've done exactly that on a number of my Win98 installed programs.

AND... There is another option in WinXP if you're having trouble making something run. Its the "compatibility mode", found under the properties of the shortcut you create. You can make XP run the application as though it were running under Win98.

Another option you have is to modify the boot.ini file to allow you to actually boot off the old Win98 disk. This would be something of a last resort for those programs that simply wont run under XP. I've got a bootable Win98 disk in my machine for exactly that...

Cheers,
Tim.
