How to recover data off of RAW hard disk.
Lockedby kelby232 · about 12 years, 4 months ago
Hi,
I need some help recovering data from my 1.5 TB Freeagent External Hard drive. It has about 700 GB of music, photos and documents. I believe it is an NTFS file system but started out by showing 0 bytes free of 0. I have tried changing the drive letter and letting windows scan and fix the drive. It is now visible and showing 800 GB free of 1.5 TB. Although when I try to open the drive I get an I/O error.
I have tried using easus data recovery but it is showing that it will take 772 hours to scan. Which is way to long. I do have a linux machine (ubuntu) which I am able to mount the drive on to. However, when I open the window the files are not showing.
The most important thing I want to do is get the files off of the hard drive. I would also like to be able to use the hard drive again but we will see.
Thanks for any help that is given.

If you mount the drive in a computer…..

as opposed to in the external case you most likely will have more options…..also….Easus will scan it quicker through the SATA connection as opposed to the USB connection on the external case.
There’s usually just a couple screws that have to be removed to pull the drive out of the external case.

That’s a good idea. I haven’t thought of that. I will do that tonight. Do you think that will drastically lower the time to finish though?
Is there a quicker option through Linux?

Connection problem

If the External drive you are using is inside a Caddy (nice pretty casing) then it will most likely be the internal connection that has fried.
You can remove the drive and plug it into another case (fairly cheap) or if you have a USB multi connection cable where you can connect various drive connections to USB (IDE, SATA etc) then it should work. -

Partition table repair

Hi kelby,
Looks like your data is not corrupted/damaged and only partition table must have been corrupted. In such cases recovering data of 1tb is a hassle n time consuming. Meanwhile you can try using partition table rebuild/repair tool. These tools will rebuild the index in a table based on existing data inside without modifying the data. You can try partition table doctor which is freely available on net and try your luck. If this doesn’t help, then you can proceed with any data recovery tools. Personally I suggest get data back for NTFS.
All the best!

recover data from hard drive

There are a couple of options here.
There is an undocumented parameter with fdisk. it is FDISK /MBR You can go to this link to find out how to format a corrupted Master boot record so it can get access to the files on the disk.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/69013
This is a dos or windows fix.
If that doesn’t work you can use this program to retrieve the data.

It seems to work good and is free. I have used it for several years. -

recovery partition table

Hello, I assume that your hard drive has a damaged partition table. According to own experience I would recommend using Linux tools testdisk. Its use as an analysis and reconstruction of the partition table. (DOS fdisk is not a safe way), TestDisk can be run from a Linux LiveCD http://www.sysresccd.org/System-tools # or install TestDisk in your Ubuntu system. For faster results, I would recommend to connect a separate hard disk from the box to S-SATA controller on your PC.

Thank you for the response.
I decided to try test disk in Ubuntu. I ran testdisk as root but I think I may have hit a snag.
I do not have any partitions listed in my “current partition structure”
Here is the output of my terminal:TestDisk 6.11, Data Recovery Utility, April 2009

testdisk

Hello.
I do not know exactly what you’ve tried the program testdisk. The program can select the type of partition table (IntelPC / EFI GPT) for recovery. After analyzing the structure of the partition table.
It is possible to use deep Analyse.
As is always the result of the read error, can be assumed that this is a hardware failure in the drive. -

As this was Salt water You need to contact a Data Recovery Specialist as at the very least the Circuit Boards on these Drives are likely to be nonfunctional. It could be considerably worse depending on how deep the drives where submerged and if they where running at the time of submersion. it also depends drastically as to how they where dried and what steps if any where taken to wash any Salt off the components of the drive.
Regardless you should repost this as a New Question as this one was asked in 2011 and is unlikely to be seen by the bulk of people who answer questions on TR.

Thanks for sharing amazing ideas but I share one another way like Kernel for windows data recover software helps curbing data loss by enabling the users to recover maximum of the lost data. The software supports both FAT and NTFS file systems. For more details visit here : http://www.recoveryfiles.org/windows-data-recovery.html
