How to select the logon DC

By NateH ·
Hi all,

I have a client that has two physically separate buildings. They have a T1 connection between the two and have been running with 1 server for both buildings. Building 1 is on subnet 10.0.0.0 and bldg 2 is on 10.1.0.0.

I am setting up another DC in the 2nd building and was wondering how to configure the clients so that they logon/authorize by that DC2 rather than DC1. Do I need to set it up as a 2nd site, or can I set it as the same site.

thanks

Nate

You should create an Active Directory site for building 2 and associate it with the subnet 10.1.0.0. Clients locate domain controller based upon their site information.

There is a fairly thorough explanation on Microsoft's site here:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/all/deployguide/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/all/deployguide/en-us/dssbd_topo_vhqq.asp

Job Aids for Windows 2003 has a worksheet that will probably impress the management folks:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=edabb894-4290-406c-87d1-607a58fc81f0&DisplayLang=en

And an example of planning domain controller placement can be found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/all/deployguide/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/all/deployguide/en-us/dssbd_topo_tsmm.asp

Best of luck with your project.
