how to share internet connection

By yellowbleep ·
Hi, I subscribe to a cable internet connection. The provider lend a Motorolla cable modem SB5101. I want to share it with my other computer, but they said I can't do that. I've tried using an ADSL gateway from linksys AG041, but it wont connect to my other computer. I've also tried to connect my other computer directly to the cable modem (using ethernet cable) with no result whatsoever.

Anybody know how to share my internet connection?
thanks!!

You need a router

Can't find anything on the linksys site about an AG401...

What you need is a router similar to a Linksys BEFSR41

Since you say that connecting an other computer directly to the cable modem does not work we have to assume yous cable company restricts access by MAC address; try powering off then on your cable modem with the other computer hooked up to it and it should work.

If that works then you can power off / on the cable modem and hook up the router to it then hook your computers to the router.

If the off / on does not work then you will have to clone the MAC of the PC that works on the router so make sure whatever router you select provides this function.

Thanks for your reply, it works! I have to clone the MAC address though, but the rest is really simple.
