How to stop constant prompting for username and password for ppoe

By steel_g ·
I recently installed a wireless linksys router between my dsl modem and desktop computer. On my desktop computer, every time I open up a new webpage to a different website, the window to my ppoe dsl connection pops up, prompting me to connect with my the username and password. When I hit cancel, the website loads, if I connect, it doesn't. How do I stop this constant pop up ? Thanks!

Assuming It's the WRT54G?

Since that is probably the most sold from Linksys.

User Guide:

http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1149562300349&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=0034939789B01

Essentially, two things. One, you put your user name and password for your ISP account in the Linksys router and two, you set the connection idle time to zero so that it is always on.

I would suggest doing a Reset (button on front) and following directions. Alternatively, they should have given you a CD that has a wizard that walks you thru the steps one by one.

I'd also uninstall any software that the ISP gave you to put on your PC. Not necessary now with the router.

PPPOE

Eliminate any PPPOE connection in your network connections folder, or set to never dial a connection. As Rick said, you don't need it now, but keep as a backup only if you ever need to troubleshoot by bypassing the router.

Scan for malware such as viruses, adware, spyware, etc.

More than likely it's a configuration issue, but I'd be leery anytime something repeatly popups and asks for a user name and password.
